National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina
January 2021
On January 14th, the new president, Steve Cook, called the Columbia Chapter
meeting of the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina to order
at 6:15 p.m. There were approximately 32 people in attendance via Zoom. The
Pledge of Allegiance was led by Drew Robinton, a chapter member and veteran
of the US military. Frank Coppel recited the One Minute Message as well as
the NFB Pledge. Janice Crosby provided the devotion by singing. "Sweet,
Sweet Spirit."
Local news from the January 9th State Wide Seminar was provided by State
President Jennifer Bazer, and the Presidential Release was played, giving us
the national perspective.
Columbia Chapter Announcements
President cook reminded everyone that the $5 chapter dues are to be paid by
January 31, or a late fee of $3 will be incurred each month that members are
late. Members should also have their $10 state dues paid online by January
31 as well. If anyone needs help with this process please Call Steve Cook at
(803) 254-0222. Leave a message if no one answers. To Make arrangements for
paying Columbia Chapter dues, call the chapter treasurer Thom Spittle at
(803) 331-3344.
President Cook reviewed the rules regarding use of the Columbia Chapter van.
In order for events to be considered a chapter event, The event must be
announced at the Chapter meeting or on the NFB of SC list serve with prior
approval from President Cook. For non-chapter events, contact President Cook
at (803) 254-0222 to make van reservations.
When making reservations, Mr. Cook will need to know the following:
* The driver being used must have prior approval by the insurance
company to be covered in case of accident or injury.
* There is a $25 rental fee per day due to hold the reservation. This
is to be paid in advance.
* The van must be clean upon return.
* The amount of fuel must be the same as it was at the beginning of
the rental when returned.
* There will be a binder in the van in which the driver must log
their name, date(s) used, and the condition of the van at the time of
rental.

Tracy Spittle, the chapter secretary, called the roll. Below is the list of
the dues paying members for the Columbia Chapter so far in 2021, who also
were in attendance at the January 14th meeting.

President Cook announced that due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Chapter
board voted not to have the annual BBQ this year. An upcoming fund raiser
will be announced at the February meeting.
NFB National Announcements
* All students are strongly urged to apply for the national NFB
Scholarships. The application information can be found on the website at
NFB.org.
* Stay tuned to the list serve for updates on the Washington Seminar,
held virtually this year, from February 8-11.
* All members are strongly encouraged to review the latest edition of
the Code of Conduct that can be found on our website at nfbofsc.org, the
national website at nfb.org and NFB Newsline. Everyone will be bound by this
new Code of Conduct; so, it is best to know the parameters of the Code.
In conclusion, tune in on February 1st to hear the next Presidential Release
live. Login information will be provided closer to the date.

Federation of the Blind is to attend a chapter or division meeting in your

division will automatically grant you membership in your state affiliate and
the national organization.
