You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams.

On 15 July 2021, the Columbia Chapter of the NFB of SC held its monthly
meeting. We were joined by approximately 25 students from the Summer Teen
Program. These students graciously prepared, served and cleaned for the meal
that the chapter members enjoyed. They did an outstanding job of carrying
out these duties while also learning very important life skills. Other
meeting highlights were: the chapter recitation of the One Minute Message,
the Pledge of Allegiance led by one of the teens, the NFB Pledge led by
Frank Coppel, and a beautiful devotion in the form of a song by Jerry
Johnson. The chapter was also provided with a financial report from Thom
Spittle, July birthdays, a roll call, and June chapter minutes. On the
national scene we heard from several members discussing their thoughts and
feelings concerning the National Convention. This was done instead of a
monthly speaker. In state news, we were reminded of the upcoming state
convention. We were reminded that as of midnight, prices for registration
increased. We were also reminded to sell Mariot Tickets and Rocky Bottom
tickets. Members also took part in a 50/50 drawing, and Pat Cheatham was the
winner of $48. Casey Rose was the winner of the second prize of $5. There
was a trivia question just for those who joined us via zoom, but no one knew
that all of the recipes in the Braille Monitor this month featured crab. For
those in person, Shelley Coppel won the prize for being the first to say and
sho that she had her NFB coin with her. We appreciate everyone who attended
our meeting. We also remind all members that this was the last meeting to be
held on Zoom. We look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting on
August 12th.

Secretary, Columbia Chapter
