Greetings Fellow Federationists:
This was a busy week in the NFB of SC. Tuesday, a small group gathered at
the statehouse while the Lieutenant Governor read the White Cane Awareness
proclamation which was signed by the governor. She seemed open to having a
legislative day for SC in February after the Washington seminar. It was
great meeting her!
The 60th anniversary of the Federation Center of the Blind, the
headquarters of the NFB of SC brought Federationists from all over the
state to celebrate sixty years of success at the Center on Friday. We
appreciate Craig Capps, son of Donald and Betty Capps being the Master of
ceremonies. We enjoyed hearing his stories as he grew up at the Center with
his parents. We heard reflections by Jennifer Bazer, Frank Coppel and Ed
Bible. We appreciate Darline Graham, Commissioner of the SC Commission for
the Blind, Jim Barbare, District Governor of the Lions attending our special
event. We couldn't have done it without the support of our Federation
family, our guests, and our sponsors. We enjoyed a meal from Blue Marlin
catering and a delicious cake made by Donna Earley, member of our At Large
Chapter. As Donna O'Neal texted, "Thank you for a nice celebration. It was
great seeing folks I haven't seen in over two years." Thank you NFB of SC
for making this event a success! I know another 60 years will bring more
training, advocacy, public relations, education, and support to blind South
Carolinians.
Blind Equality Achievement Month, BEAM
Remember history. Advance equality. Celebrate accomplishments. Formerly
known as Meet the Blind Month, the National Federation of the Blind
celebrates the organized blind movement during October. Throughout the
month, our members conduct a variety of outreach activities in their local
communities. Many of these activities center on White Cane Awareness Day
which is October 15. What are your chapters doing to promote BEAM? Let's
have all BEAM events listed in the Positive Note!
Cherokee
The Cherokee chapter will be holding two community awareness events for
BEAM. The first one will be on Friday, October 15th from 11am-1pm at the
Jiggy Pig Restaurant in Gaffney. The second one will be at that same time
frame on Saturday, October 30th at Zakary's Coffee Shop also in Gaffney.
Members will be greeting customers, handing out national, state, and chapter
literature and info, Braille alphabet cards, and will be doing Braille
reading and writing demonstrations. Donations will also be accepted during
the events as well. We are blessed with these two local businesses, both of
which several members frequent, who are going to allow us to set up a table
within their locations. The Jiggy Pig is an outdoor drive-in style setup but
people do walk up to the building to order and pick up their food. We are
hoping to garner some interest while people wait for their orders to be
filled.
Sumter
The Sumter Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina
will observe "BEAM" at the Sumter County Fair!!! Our fair booth is located
inside the Sumter Civic Center, 700 W. Liberty Street, Sumter, SC 29150.
All are invited to visit us Tuesday, October 19-22nd (4:00 p.m.---8:00 p.m.)
and Saturday, October 23, 2021 (10:00 a.m.---8:00 p.m.).
During "BEAM" our members will share information regarding blindness,
distribute brochures, demonstrate blind paraphernalia and solicit fundraiser
tickets for a drawing. These tickets are 3 for $5, a $25 gift card and the
grand prize will be an Echo Dot!!! You may CASHAPP to $NFBSumterChapter or
PayPal to 8039681018.
Please TEXT Andrew Adams, 803-269-3803 once you send the PayPal or CASHAPP
so, you can get your ticket numbers. Alexa will choose a random number at
8:00 p.m. at the closing of the fair booth, Saturday, October 23rd.
THANK YOU!!!
NFB Sumter Chapter
Who are We? NFB of SC!
I am excited to continue to learn about each of you and share your
interests, stories, goals, and your passion with our Federation family in
the Palmetto State. In this section, I will ask a question each week to get
to know you and for our Federation family to get to know you. Reflections
will be shared in future issues of the Positive Note and the Palmetto Blind.
I look forward to your contributions.
>From Shannon Cook:
This speaks to the questions from the last two weeks. I am active in the
Federation because the NFB philosophy has shaped who I am as a blind person,
wife, dog mother (LOL), employee, and Christian. My life is viewed through
the lens of Federationism. I have had a couple of times where I questioned
my involvement, but I always came back because of what the NFB has done to
build my confidence, instill a spirit of equality, and fostered a commitment
to excellence. I am active and stay involved to pass those things along to
others to raise them up, as was done for me. In life, we are always growing
and striving to be better. The Federationist I was at 25 was not the same
as when I was 33, or now that I am 48. The more knowledge we have,
intertwined with the personal base of knowledge we gain from living our
lives, gives us much different perspectives at different points along our
path.
The question this week:
If the NFB of SC offered weekend trainings at least once a quarter, what
type of trainings would be most helpful to you? Assistive technology,
Braille, cooking, other. Please be a specific as possible.
Please email your responses to:
Jennifer.h.bazer at gmail.com <mailto:Jennifer.h.bazer at gmail.com>
If you do not have email or not comfortable with technology, please call or
text me at 803-960-9977 so that I may capture your responses as well.
>From the We Care Committee
Please keep Dorothy Barksdale in your thoughts and prayers. She lost her
stepmother which was like her mother to Dorothy. Also, Dorothy is going
through some significant medical challenges at this time.
>From Shannon Cook and Shelley Coppel, Senior Camp
Due to a low number of applicants this fall, Shelley Coppel and Shannon
Cook, Co-Directors of SC Senior Camp have decided to Cancel the upcoming
fall session. There also will not be a virtual SC Senior Camp Day. Plans
are already in the works to hold a fantastic relaunch of in-person session
of senior camp in spring 2022. Stay tuned for more information.

NFB Pledge
I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of
the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to
support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.
NFB One Minute Message
"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back."
