Jennifer.H.Bazer at gmail.com <mailto:Jennifer.H.Bazer at gmail.com>

              Greetings Fellow Federationists:

Alexa, turn off my 5:50 A.M. alarm. Feet hit the floor; across the house to
wake up Kaylin; her bus will arrive at 6:37 A.M. My phone chimes, a text
from a member to let me know someone has passed away in the family. "Kaylin,
make sure you have your lunch, your chrome book, your mask. Here is the bus.
I love you. Do your best. Be kind to everyone you meet." She gives me a hug
and runs to meet the bus at the end of the driveway.

I respond to the text from the member. "Sorry about your loss. Prayers and
thoughts are with you. Would you like me to circulate the loss of your
family member on the list serv and the Positive Note?" It is 6:55 A.M. Time
to wake up Cade; his bus will arrive at 7:17. A call comes in from another
member. I am not able to take the call at the moment, but I will call them
back after Cade is on the bus. "Cade, make sure you have your Chrome Book,
your mask, and your phone. I love you. Do your best. Be kind to everyone you
meet." He gives me a huge hug and runs across the lawn to meet the bus
across the street.

Now, back to that phone call I missed from the member. They had questions
about how to join the Federation zoom room for the Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion meeting.

Now, it is Monday so that means the Positive Note will be out by 8:00 A.M.
Did I include everything? Did I take out items that are no longer relevant?
Did I check for spelling and grammatical errors? I have pressed the send
button and it is off for all to read.

It has been 2.5 hours since I have opened my eyes, put my feet on the floor
and began my day. Now, it is time to take a shower, get dressed and reach
out to students, parents, teachers of blind students, regarding
pre-employment transition services including self-advocacy, work-readiness,
college exploration, internships, mentoring and more. I stop around noon to
grab a bite to eat, check my texts and phone calls along with email
messages. I begin to work on the Positive Note for the next week so I don't
have to do it all in a weekend. I return a call from a chapter president
regarding their financial report that will be submitted to the state office.
I text a member thanking them for their SUN, share unlimited NFB donation. I
email president Riccobono to let him know I will be attending this
Saturday's affiliate president leadership meeting from 1:00 until 6:00 via
zoom and 1:00 until 4:00 on Sunday via zoom.

I resume my work from this morning organizing appointments to see students
and parents. I take a hand-held video magnifier to a student at Anderson
University because she cannot see the board. I arrive home after 6:00 PM
from Anderson and jump in my car where the driver is waiting to take all of
us to scouts. Cade is in boy scouts and Kaylin in brownies. I present to my
daughter's girl scout troop on blindness where I have the Braille alphabet
cards and their names written in Braille.

We are now home, it is after 8:00 PM. It is time for homework and then baths
and showers. The children finally climb in bed after 9:30. They read a book
or I read a book to them. We say our prayers and they drift off to sleep.
The house is quiet but my day is not over. Time to check email, missed calls
and texts. I respond to email from teachers and parents as well as affiliate
business. It is too late to return calls and texts. I will do that tomorrow.
It is after 11:00. I finally crawl in bed. Grateful I had the opportunity to
spend time with my children in the mornings and attend their activities in
the evenings. I am blessed to talk, text and email with our affiliate
members, our leaders during the day. I am physically exhausted, but my brain
will not shut down. I finally drift off to sleep a little after midnight.
Tomorrow is another day. Another day that I "get to" do all the wonderful
things in my life. I don't "have to", it is a choice. I "get to" and I am so
thankful!

Palmetto Connects, Thursday, February 3, 2022, 6PM

Palmetto Connects will be held Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 6:00 PM Eastern
on the Federation zoom platform. I look forward to seeing all of you for
happenings in the NFB of SC! Please note, this is not for just leaders, it
is for all of us around the state and beyond.

NFB of SC 2022 Legislative Breakfast, February 23

As some of you may know, the NFB of SC has in years past hosted a
Legislative Breakfast here in Columbia, a morning event at the Statehouse
with our State Legislators.

We on the Legislative and Advocacy Committee have great news to share! The
2022 Legislative Breakfast is scheduled for Wednesday, February 23, 2022
from 8-10 AM, but we need your help to make this day a great success.
Whether you are a social butterfly, a knowledgeable legislative speaker, a
technically savvy video editor, or a well-organized behind-the-scenes
supporter, we can use your skills to benefit the NFB of SC.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, spots to attend this in-person
only event are limited. We estimate that only 15-20 Federationists will be
attending.

If you are interested in contributing to the event either through
preparation work or in-person attendance, please contact me directly via
email at annahprice97 at gmail.com <mailto:annahprice97 at gmail.com> , no later
than noon on Thursday, February 10. While we cannot welcome everyone to the
event, we want to show off the strengths and the diversity of the
Federation. No one's participation is assumed, regardless of previous
experience or position in the state affiliate, so everyone must reach out to
me by the above deadline if they would like to be considered.

Please note that there are a variety of roles and responsibilities
available, so if you are at all interested, please reach out. We will not
know that you hope to participate unless you communicate that to me
directly.

After the Thursday, February 10 deadline, interested individuals will be
contacted with more information.

Again, while we sincerely wish we could have everyone join us in-person,
that is simply not possible this year, so we encourage interested
individuals to reach out proactively. Rest assured that if you are not
selected to attend the event this year, you will have another chance next
year.

If you have questions about the 2022 Legislative Breakfast, please don't
hesitate to reach out.

Thank you!

Anna Price, Co-Chair

NFB of SC Movie Night Friday, February 4 at 8:00 PM Eastern

Do you have plans on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 8:00 PM Eastern? If not
come and join the National Federation of the Blind of Sc for a presentation
of the movie 42! All of the movies that we show are audio described. The
Zoom information to join us is below the information pertaining to the
movie.

In 1945, sportswriter

Wendell Smith

suggests that

Brooklyn Dodgers

owner

Branch Rickey

consider Jackie Robinson as the black ballplayer Rickey is looking for.
Robinson and his team, the

Kansas City Monarchs,

stop by a gas station. When the attendant refuses Robinson entry to the
washroom, Robinson says they will find another station at which to fill up
the

team bus, and the attendant relents. As Robinson steps out, a scout for the
Dodgers sent by Rickey approaches him and invites him to Brooklyn. He is
offered

a $600 per month contract and a $3,500 signing bonus, which Robinson accepts
after being warned by Rickey that he must control his temper if he wants to

play. Robinson proposes to his girlfriend,

Rachel,

by phone and she accepts.

During

spring training,

Robinson earns a roster spot with the

Montreal Royals,

the

AAA

affiliate of the Brooklyn

farm system.

After a great season there and spring training in Panama, he advances to the
Dodgers. Many of the players soon sign a petition, stating they refuse to

play with Robinson, but manager

Leo Durocher

insists Robinson will play with the main team, and they relent. When
Durocher is suspended by

Happy Chandler,

the

Commissioner of Baseball,

for actions in his personal life, leaving the Dodgers without a manager to
start the regular season,

Burt Shotton

agrees to manage the team.

In a game against the

Philadelphia Phillies,

manager

Ben Chapman

taunts Robinson, causing him to go back to the dugout and smash his bat out
of frustration. With encouragement from Rickey, Robinson then returns to the

field and hits a single, steals second base and advances to third on a
throwing error, and scores the winning run. When Chapman's behavior toward
Robinson

generates bad press for the team, Phillies'

general manager

Herb Pennock

requires him to pose with Robinson for newspapers and magazine photos prior
to the next game between the two teams.

Later, Robinson's teammate

Pee Wee Reese

comes to understand what kind of pressure Robinson is facing, and makes a
public show of solidarity, standing with his arm around Robinson's shoulders

before a hostile crowd at

Crosley Field

in

Cincinnati,

silencing them.

In a game against the

St. Louis Cardinals,

Enos Slaughter

"accidentally" spikes Robinson on the back of the leg with his

cleats

while running to first base.

Robinson's home run against

Pittsburgh Pirates

pitcher

Fritz Ostermueller,

who had earlier hit him in the head, helps clinch the National League
pennant for the Dodgers, sending them to the

World Series.

A series of texts are shown in the epilogue of the film regarding Robinson
and his teammates future involvements as well as others.

Joke of the Week

What goes up but never comes back down?
Your age!

Fascinating Fact of the Week

The English word with the most definitions is "set."

According to Guinness World Records, "set" has
<https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/english-word-with-the-mo
st-meanings/> the largest number of meanings of any word in the English
language, with 430 different senses listed in the 1989 edition of Second
Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. The word "sets" the record with an
entry running 60,000 words, or 326,000 characters, and no other English word
has come close since.

Final Thought

Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude.

-Martin Luther King Jr.

NFB Pledge

I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of
the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to
support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.

NFB One Minute Message

"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back."
