Dear Federation Family,

Happy New Year! In case you missed the Presidential Release Live Wednesday evening, I want to again thank you for your help in promoting the Federation’s end-of-year giving campaign. We far exceeded the goal of $50,000 to match the generous contribution from Vispero.

The new year is already off to a busy start with meetings on Capitol Hill, planning for upcoming seminars, and our return to in-person meetings at the Washington Seminar. If you plan to attend the president’s retreat, be sure to send your itinerary to Beth Braun at bbraun at nfb.org<mailto:bbraun at nfb.org> as soon as possible.

Don’t forget it is not too early to make your plans to be at the 2023 National Convention in Houston, Texas, from July 1-6.

Critical Actions:
Celebration of Life for Scott LaBarre:

Scott C. LaBarre, who was a longtime Federation member, a fierce leader in our movement, and a great friend to so many of us, passed away on Saturday, December 10. Thank you for the outpouring of love. A Celebration of Life to honor Scott will be held January 21, 2023, in Denver, Colorado, at 4:30 p.m., mountain / 6:30 p.m., eastern. Those wishing to participate in person are asked to RSVP for planning purposes. Location details will be shared once the RSVP form is completed.

News:
Monthly Financial Reports and Statements:
This is a reminder to get all of your 2022 monthly financial reports and bank statements to our affiliate finance team so that we can start on your 2022 990 filings. Our affiliate finance group is hard at work processing the documents we have, but we are missing reports and statements from most affiliates. These delays will affect our timing for filing IRS tax forms and state charitable registrations.
Thank you to those NFB organizations that have provided all of their documents so far for 2022: NFB of Connecticut, NFB of Florida, NFB of Iowa, NFB of Maine, NFB of Missouri, NFB of Montana, NFB of Nebraska, NFB of New Mexico, NOPBC, NFB of North Carolina, NFB of Oregon, NFB of Puerto Rico, and NFB of Washington. If you want to know why your affiliate or division doesn’t appear on this list, please contact Elyse Bryan at ebryan at nfb.org<mailto:ebryan at nfb.org> for your list of missing documents.

New Feature in New Member Form:
You asked for it; we delivered. There is now a checkbox on the new member form to indicate if someone has been a member for a long time and does not need the new member materials. This should not be used for someone who has stepped away from the Federation and is now returning to membership. It is intended for those members who have always been members and just were never added to the database for some reason.
Also, the automated rolling over of membership statues did not happen exactly as we were expecting. Our technology team is working on it, and more information will be provided as it is available.

World Braille Day:
In January 2022, Google launched their new domain opportunity to promote special days and events for promoting a cause. We are excited to celebrate World Braille Day with the URL www.Braille.day<http://www.Braille.day>. Check out the message with the National Library Service Director, an article about the future of Braille, and more.

Washington Seminar Career Fair:
Share this opportunity with members attending the upcoming Washington Seminar who may be job seeking or employers looking for more talent. Our next career fair is Monday, January 30, 2023, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET at the Holiday Inn Washington Capitol. This will be an in-person event. Registration is now open.

· Employer Registration<https://nfb.org/form/career-fair-employer-registration>

Braille Monitor January Issue Available:
The latest issue of our flagship publication is now available. Read about the experience of learning about independence, seeking employment opportunities, stories from members, and more. Access the 2023 January Braille Monitor now.<https://nfb.org/images/nfb/publications/bm/bm23/bm2301/bm2301tc.htm>

Affiliate Finance 2023:
Our affiliate finance group is finalizing the plans for 2023 financials. Remember our goal for 2023 is to work in conjunction with affiliates as transactions are recorded. We will be setting up some Zoom meetings for later in January. These meetings will include our plans for 2023 and trainings for presidents and treasurers on the updated coding system. Our hope is to make everything easier and give affiliates the support needed as it is needed.

Where the Blind Work:
Please join us on Thursday, January 19, at 8:00 p.m., eastern, to celebrate the work and accomplishments of blind and low-vision people with experience in the medical and healthcare field.

  * Hear about what their typical day looks like.
  * Hear how attitudinal and accessibility barriers are overcome at work.
  * Learn about alternative techniques and strategies used to do these jobs.

Register at https://nfb.org/programs-services/employment/where-the-blind-work-webinars-registration.
Or contact Maurice Peret, coordinator of Career Mentoring and Employment Programs, at 410-659-9314, extension 2350, or at MPeret at nfb.org<mailto:MPeret at nfb.org>

Reminders:
Donated Services Reminder:
Please be sure to complete your 2022 donated services forms to report your volunteer hours by January 9, if you have been appointed to do so. It is vital that we collect the number of hours you all volunteer as it keeps our charity ratings and program service percentages up, which is crucial for our fundraising initiatives.
Please also send any new suggestions for appointees to outreach at nfb.org<mailto:outreach at nfb.org>.
You can report hours at the following link:
https://nfb.org/get-involved/donated-services-form
Thanks to all of you for making our donated services program work.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
