Dear Federation Family,
Wednesday, September 11, 2024 was the 23rd anniversary of the tragic
destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City. This is the worst
terrorist attack that has ever taken place on American soil and the effects
of that day live in infamy. As we remember those innocent individuals who
died and those whose lives were forever changed that day, let us be thankful
for the great nation in which we live and the freedom we enjoy that others
would deprive us of if permitted to do so.
We continue the fight to achieve greater independence and fair treatment by
Uber and Lift. On September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson was on the 78th floor
of the World Trade Center when the first plane struck it above him. After
ensuring that his team were evacuating, his guide dog, Rosell, then led him
down 78 flights of steps and another 40 blocks in New York City to safety in
a friend's apartment. Yet, uber and Lift want to deny blind citizens the
right to travel with their dog guides. We must not allow this discriminatory
behavior to continue. Steve Cook will represent South Carolina at the
upcoming rally in California on October 15, 2024 as the Federation descends
upon Uber and Lift headquarters. These transportation providers must do more
than pay lip services, they must affect transformative change in their
practices. Let's support our friends as they attend this important event.
Blind Equality Achievement Month (BEAM) begins October 1, 2024 and we need
exciting BEAM events that showcase our many talents and success stories
within the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina. Please share
your events so that they can be shared in the Positive Note as well as on
www.nfb.org <http://www.nfb.org> .
