[NFBP-Talk] [GreaterPhilly] Zoom Events This Week

Hi everyone,

First of all, I hope you are all safe and doing well given the inclement weather.

I have great respect for Juliet after how she first brought up the chapter segregation issue. Since I am still relatively new to the Pennsylvania affiliate and Philadelphia area, I want to give the benefit of the doubt that there are things that have occurred prior to my arrival and outside my knowledge that have caused people to feel a certain way. I hope that I can do all that I can to bring healing.

I am always open to talking about any kind of diversity and inclusion work, so you can all call me anytime, even outside of formal conference calls and zoom meetings. I genuinely enjoy it.

My understanding is that our affiliate leadership chose this topic for this call because it is an area where many of us really need to learn how to be inclusive. I certainly feel like I have a lot to learn about how to be inclusive to the deaf blind population in our programming.

This is one of those scenarios where there is a group that hasn’t gotten really much attention yet, so we are now putting our attention on the needs of that subset of our prospective membership base.

We all might have noticed at national convention how there were lots of different gatherings, discussions, and events that focused in on certain subsets of our membership base in order to help us fully or more fully learn about those groups. This is like that.

I hope that helps, and I’m looking forward to talking to everyone in a little bit less than an hour!

Justin

Good afternoon Juliet,

Our deaf blind population is one component of diversity and inclusion. It is very important that the affiliate knows the types of things that can be done to make sure that this population feels inclusive in our activities. We not only have members who are deaf blind, but we may sometimes look for speakers, or vendors who are deaf blind also. We are just trying to gain knowledge from those who live with these experiences daily.

I hope this puts a better light on the subject.

Thank you,
Denice Brown

So let me understand this a little better. The diversity and inclusion meeting is now being censored to a topic for one subset of individual within the organization? That is the purpose of the diversity and inclusion meeting? This is absolutely ridiculous. If you and our state affiliate president would like to censor what is being said, there is no purpose north transparency in these meetings. There is no real goal for true diversity or inclusion. It is bullshit. Forward that over to whoever you’d like.
