<https://a1e0.engage.squarespace-mail.com/r?m=639763278c8c7854e97e4ef9&u=https%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2F3uzaw3tr&w=5d8906a74d81b0431437c1f9&l=en-US&s=SOuAnTdWVlg_4X9R8OVsEPvoGXQ%3D>.
About the opportunity: Open Circle Theatre will be in residence at The
Kennedy Center March 6-10, developing Amy Claussen’s branching-storyline
play, Little Blue, with soundscape by James Rushin. The week will culminate
in an invited reading. About the play: Little Blue boldly reimagines the
original 1837 Little Mermaid through the lens of mental illness and
disability and allows for the audience to make choices about a branching
storyline. Written for adults, it rejects disability tropes and portrays
characters with nuance and messiness who aren’t cured or killed in the end.
At its core, Little Blue is an imperfect coming-of-acceptance story and
love letter to anyone who has experienced thoughts untethered from reality.
This play is all these things and funny, joyous, and hopeful.
*Union Status:* Non-Union
*Network/Studio/Production Company :* Open Circle Theatre, in residence at
The Kennedy Center
*Director :* Laley Lippard
*Writer:* by Amy Claussen, after Hans Christian Andersen, soundscape by
James Rushin
*Character Breakdown (Age, Gender Identity, Disability, Race, Ethnicity,
etc.) :* ACTOR 2 / WINKS. Adult to play 17 (flexible age, 20’s-40’s+).
Woman or nonbinary/nonconforming performer who identifies as blind/low
vision. Some singing is required, though you do not need to be a strong
singer. Housing provided and limited reimbursement for travel. Non-union.
*About the role:*
In Act 1, below the water, we meet Periwinkle, or Winks for short, the
second-youngest mermaid sister and closest to our main character, Little
Blue. Winks is a science nerd who’s knowledgeable about varieties of
polyps. She’s scared of most things, but consequently very smart with
emotions. While the audience may notice Winks and her sisters have
disabilities, it’s not the story’s focus… because they’re mermaids, and
because they’re interdependent.
In Act 2, the same actor plays Willow, an above-the-water parallel to
Winks. In the human world, having any kind of disability kind of sucks when
you’re 17 and it’s vaguely 1800’s Europe-ish and you’re looking for a
suitor. Willow and Little have a complex friendship then rivalry, as the
intersection of ableism and sexism influences their choices and morality.
*Actor also plays several ensemble roles.*
*Rate of pay?:* $435 honorarium for 5-day residency
*Audition dates?:* Currently accepting headshots and resumes
