It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of a long-time
federationist, Wiley Smith. Known to all of us as Buck, he passed away on
Wednesday, July 27th, after experiencing chest pains and being taken to the
hospital. Buck was 88 years of age and was probably the oldest,
continuously-active member of the NFB of Pennsylvania. He was a wealth of
information about the earlier days of the NFB. He actually did meet the
first president of the Pennsylvania Federation of the Blind and he also
attended the NFB national convention that was held in Philadelphia in the
1960s. He was one of the founding members of the Keystone chapter of the
NFB of PA.
Although he did not serve in a leadership role, he was politically astute in
all levels of government. He was aware of matters affecting blind persons
as well as general trends. If there was a rally to be held or a picket line
to march in, Buck was the first one there. Whenever a group was organized
to label and stuff envelopes or carry boxes, there was Buck at the table.
No job was beneath him. He was a lifetime member of the NFB of Pennsylvania
and always attended chapter meetings until he became ill in the last 12
months of his life. He will be greatly missed by all of us but especially
by Patricia Grebloski, with whom he shared his life for the past 35 years.
As of yet, no plans have been made for any services, but we will advise as
things progress.
Jim Antonacci
President Emeritus
NFB of Pennsylvania
