Dear Colleagues,

 

A number of you have received a message like the one pasted below with the name of the recipient taken out. This message is from Amos Miller, and it invites you to participate in a special event for NFB chapters. Some of you have asked if our national organization has endorsed or coordinated this outreach. We have not, and I would urge you to proceed with extreme caution.

 

I did meet with Mr. Miller in the fall, and I did invite their team to give a product demonstration to the leadership of the Federation during the time of our national board meeting in the beginning of December. Our board gave them a considerable amount of constructive feedback. We asked to find ways to give them deeper feedback on their product, and those discussions are still pending. It is unfortunate that, despite a relationship at the executive level, they have decided to promote a specific time for Federation chapters without the coordination of the leadership.

 

At this point, we cannot recommend you participate in this event. We encourage you to focus on efforts that build the priorities of the organized blind movement and, if an opportunity to learn about the experimental product from this company fits into that, then you may wish to engage them. In the meantime, we will continue to talk with their leadership and determine whether or not a working relationship can be forged to integrate the expertise and authentic feedback of the blind community into their development work through our Center of Excellence efforts at the national office. Until that time, you should assume that this company has no partnership with the Federation.
