Dear fellow NFB PA Members,
Attn: Blind parents or caregivers
I am writing to share a troubling experience I had with a pediatric neurologist at UPMC of Central PA and to ask if any of you have faced similar issues. At my daughter’s appointment, the doctor asked discriminatory questions such as whether my blindness training included learning how to feed my children and how I was able to care for them—implying that blindness equates to an inability to parent. This attitude is both insulting and unacceptable, and I have begun the process of filing a complaint.
Have you ever experienced similar treatment from medical professionals—assumptions, inappropriate questions, or doubts about your ability to parent because of blindness or another disability? If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could summarize your experiences and send them to me at HudsonFam5780 at outlook.com
Collecting these stories may help us identify patterns and consider ways to address this issue more broadly.
Thank you for your time and your willingness to share.
Warm regards,
[
