Deadlines for ordering 2011 White Cane Day commemorative T-shirts are
right around the corner—September 2 for mail-in orders and September 9
for orders brought in person to the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center
in Austin.

We welcome White Cane Day event sponsors from all parts of the state.
Let us know by September 1 if you would like to have the names of
sponsors from your area printed on the back of the shirt.

The shirt is a bargain at just $6.00. Payments for mail-in orders are
by money order only (payable to Travis Association for the Blind). For
payments made in person, cash or money orders made payable to Travis
Association for the Blind are accepted. A link to the form and
instructions placing your order is on the White Cane Day Web site.

In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed White Cane Safety Day,
recognizing the white cane as a symbol of a blind person’s ability to
come and go on his own. Every year since the proclamation, hundreds
have gathered throughout the world to celebrate White Cane Day in
mid-October.

DARS offices around the state host local celebrations. Our very own
State Capitol is the scene of the largest White Cane Day celebration
in the nation, organized by DARS and a number of nonprofit
organizations and agencies.

So show your support for the empowerment and independence of Texans
who are blind. Order shirts, get the word out, and learn more about
