We are excited to share that the Washington State Department of Transportation’s viaduct removal has progressed to a point that we can now begin building the <https://waterfrontseattle.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=74d6f1b443703d02c3eb093c5&id=7a5054277f&e=68d44d81d8> new Alaskan Way within the footprint of the former viaduct. The waterfront will remain open throughout construction. Read on for construction news and major milestones upcoming in early 2020.

CONSTRUCTION OF NEW ALASKAN WAY HAS BEGUN

This week, we expand our construction zone to include Alaskan Way from S King St to Marion St. Alaskan Way construction starts with major utility work, including replacing a mainline sewer that is nearly 20 feet deep and under water! New lanes, including transit-only lanes south of Columbia St, will be completed by late 2021, followed by the rest of Alaskan Way, <https://waterfrontseattle.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=74d6f1b443703d02c3eb093c5&id=9fb96ba23e&e=68d44d81d8> the bike path and the park promenade.

The new Alaskan Way includes raised street crossings, wide sidewalks, extensive pedestrian lighting, green stormwater infrastructure and more than 500 new street trees.

KEEPING YOU MOVING AS WE MOVE AHEAD

The waterfront is open! During construction, we'll keep two travel lanes in each direction open on Alaskan Way during all peak hours of the day. We’ll also maintain pedestrian paths and crosswalks, bike routes and access to businesses and residences.

We are keeping as many crosswalks and pedestrian paths open as possible during construction.

OPENING COLUMBIA STREET, CONNECTING TRANSIT

In January 2020, we will reopen Columbia St from Alaskan Way to First Ave. Our project improvements will support all-day transit service between West Seattle/SW King County and downtown Seattle by creating a <https://waterfrontseattle.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=74d6f1b443703d02c3eb093c5&id=c14f133ca0&e=68d44d81d8> more efficient and reliable bus route when King County Metro buses shift from current temporary routes to the permanent route along Columbia St and Alaskan Way in early 2020.

A-PIER-ING IN EARLY 2020: A NEW PIER 62!

Have you been watching all the work happening on <https://waterfrontseattle.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=74d6f1b443703d02c3eb093c5&id=976b8617ed&e=68d44d81d8> Pier 62? We’ve seen construction move from pile installation to electrical work, from big barges to the placing of edge beams. Pier 62 will be complete and open to the public in early 2020!

In this photo Pier 62 decking installation is underway. The rebuilt Pier 62 will be a flexible park space with views of Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains and the Seattle skyline.

This fall begins an exciting new phase for our waterfront. More updates, including a public celebration for the opening of Pier 62, will be coming soon!
