I suspect there are some issues that are unique to your community.

*What advocacy does your town need?*
In Seattle, I am sure you have advocacy needs that are similar to people
living in other parts of Washington, but I suspect there are some issues
that are unique to your community. I want to hear about those advocacy
needs. Disability Rights Washington, your statewide advocates for the human
and civil rights of people with disabilities, is in the process of setting
advocacy priorities for the next five years. Hearing from you and others
in Seattle is important to us. It is the only way we can prioritize the
issues that are most important to people across our entire state.

I am also happy to meet with any group of people in Seattle you think may
be interested in sharing their perspective with me. They do not need to be
a group focused specifically on disability, because I know issues affecting
people with disabilities are present everywhere. If you have a group you
would like me to meet with, please email me directly at davidc at dr-wa.org.
By way of background for anyone you may share this email with who does not
know much about Disability Rights Washington, we have been around since the
early 1970's and are the only statewide advocacy organization focused on
serving people with all types of disabilities. That is a broad and diverse
group of people.
It includes people with anxiety, autism, cancer, dementia, depression,
dyslexia, HIV, intellectual disabilities, and low vision. It includes those
who are Deaf or use hearing aids, and people who use mobility devices like
walkers, wheelchairs, or canes. As you can see, a lot of different ways of
living fall under the various legal definitions of disability that guide
our services.
We have over 40 full time staff in offices in Spokane, Seattle, and
Olympia. Every day, our staff educate people with disabilities about their
rights, pursue lawsuits to transform broken systems, educate government
officials to improve laws and policies, promote connections between groups
working on similar advocacy goals, make documentaries and advocacy videos
to inform the public, monitor the conditions of correctional and treatment
facilities around the state, and investigate abuse, neglect, and financial
exploitation of people with disabilities.

helps ensure all of this work is focused on what Washingtonians with
disabilities actually need and want.
Thank you very much in advance for helping us hear from a diverse
cross-section of our community,
David
