Why does this matter?

Solutions to keep people safe while traveling on our streets are known. The
Seattle Department of Transportation has the expertise to fix dangerous
streets, but they are often hobbled by red tape and "the Seattle Process."
One example of this red tape is the ability of unelected historic district
boards to veto proposed safety projects.

At intersections the ability for everyone, whether you are walking, biking,
rolling, or driving to see each other clearly is critical. Which is why
parking is not allowed within 20' of crosswalks

but too often cars are parked there illegally anyway, blocking visibility
and leading to crashes.

Just this year, the Pioneer Square Preservation Board blocked SDOT's
proposal to prevent illegal car parking and improve safety and
accessibility at 18 intersections in Pioneer Square

These intersections have a history of crashes, and SDOT knew how to make
them safer, but were not allowed to.

*Tell the Seattle City Council to support Councilmember Rinck and Foster's
amendment that would allow SDOT to implement safety improvements in
historic districts. *This legislation would still encourage SDOT to consult
with these historic committees to "minimize design conflicts in alignment
with the historic, cultural, architectural, or geographic significance of
the district."
