Car-free Market Street

Starts January 29, 2020

Starting Wednesday, January 29, 2020, Market Street will become car-free eastbound from 10th Street to Main Street and westbound from Steuart Street to Van Ness Avenue – a Vision Zero quick-build initiative that ushers in the Better Market Street project.

In addition to restricting private vehicles to make the corridor safer for people who walk and bicycle, the street-use changes will include extending Muni-only lanes, new loading zones and much-needed intersection safety improvements.

Half of the City’s 10 most dangerous intersections for pedestrians and bicyclists are on Market Street. Each year, since 2014, the corridors averaged more than100 injury collisions per year, with 75 percent involving people walking or biking. By reducing conflicts with proven safety measures, such as turn restrictions, painted safety zones and safe-hit posts, gets the City closer the <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001LRQfh51a8EUG3GBfDE8mNw7Fe_YVVJ6Vu3HD9Em_MPgEtyuZCpYtIJefSlmVKf8uxwDbq2e-qLNSlVjBEMTOrZ2HpECWzSBddSHZDoBg5BbVVfcW2u8zTybdrmFPoNsCp8Squp9tHrn7iYRcoBSQJw==&c=Zkl6l01F1CWoDE-ZJfTYpJUrH_xDUbn1WdTxNDmZBmeFU3B_NO2Dfw==&ch=8H0XedvGVO7PSCHC7vmOX2d_stZZEebAphrQLtzplLBjvBGuCzhQ_w==> Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on San Francisco roads by 2024.

In addition to safety benefits, going car-free on Market Street will prioritize transit on a street that sees upwards of 200 buses per hour during peak commute times. Boosting Muni efficiency on Market Street will with transit-only lanes will improve the system citywide.

Quick-build elements starting in January

While Market Street officially becomes car-free on January 29, other changes listed below are set to be implemented in the first half of 2020.

Vehicle Changes

No private vehicles will be allowed on Market Street eastbound from 10th to Main streets and westbound from Steuart Street to Van Ness Avenue. These restrictions will apply to Uber, Lyft and other app-based hail-ride companies.

* All traffic can continue to cross Market Street at intersections

* Vehicles with commercial license plates, taxis, emergency vehicles and paratransit will still be able to use Market Street

* Circulation changes for sections of Ellis, Jones, Second and Steuart streets to improve safety and maintain local access

* Right turns onto Valencia Street from eastbound Market Street will no longer be allowed. Page Street will become a bike-only connection to and from Market Street

Transit Enhancements

* Extending the existing eastbound transit-only lane from Third Street to Main Street; no vehicles other than Muni can use this segment of Market Street.

* Changing the existing red transit- and taxi-only lane to Muni-only between 9th and Third streets

* Changing the existing red transit- and taxi-only lane to Muni-only between 12th and 9th streets

Loading Changes

* 100 new passenger and commercial loading zones on cross streets to accommodate safe loading

* Peak hour loading restrictions on Market Street to reduce conflicts between people on bicycles, transit and commercial vehicles will go into effect:

* No loading in the southside of Market Street (eastbound direction towards the Ferry Building) weekdays 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

* No loading in the northside of Market Street (westbound direction towards Twin Peaks) weekdays between 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Additional Safety Improvements

* Adding khaki paint and plastic delineator posts at locations with future sidewalk widening at 8 intersections (Drumm, Main, Beale, 1st, 8th, 9th, Fell, and Page streets)

* New bicycle intersection improvements at Eighth, Page, Battery and Valencia streets

* Closing the “Battery Bridge” to vehicles (the small, elevated section of Battery Street between Bush and Market streets)

Project Information

These quick-build traffic changes, implemented by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, are the first series of improvements envisioned under the Better Market Street, the City’s multi-agency project to transform 2.2 miles of Market Street from Octavia Boulevard to Steuart Street. The project’s goal is to enhance safety and accessibility, improve transit performance, replace aging infrastructure and revitalize the corridor’s streetscape.

Construction on the full project will be managed by Public Works and is expected to start in late 2020 or early 2021.
