> Voyagers' TRX Event Re-cap
>
> Physical fitness is often a scary term for students with vision loss. It means being soloed out to do something alone, like walking the track while the other students play basketball, or trying to blend in with the group during kick ball and hoping the ball doesn’t hit them in the head. The result often being students do not believe fitness is possible for someone who has vision loss. During the Voyagers TRX Fitness Workshop, students and adults were introduced to TRX Suspension Training, a fully accessible workout using only their body weight - no need for weights, a ride to the gym, flying balls, or heavy machines. Vista youth learned from Walt Raineri, an avid blind athlete, and the founder of TRX, Randy Hetrick, how to strengthen their bodies using fun, simple, and customizable movements. The students felt the burn as they used their bodies to build muscle, stabilize their core, and enhance their health. After the workout, their faces were dripping with beads of sweat, but their smiles were stretched ear to ear as they gathered around Randy and Walt to learn how they could continue training on their own. Check out the photos and videos here!
>
> Expanded Core Curriculum skills developed:
>
> Safe travel techniques: Traveling as a person without sight requires lots of walking and body coordination! Having a strong core is key to safely walking a school campus or climbing a flight of stairs.
> Social interactions: Having a healthy body is an important aspect when interacting with others. The Fitness Workshop provided students a chance to socialize in the moment and beyond with others who have used this popular fitness equipment. Having a fitness outlet increases student energy and decreases anxiety and depression, all areas which impact social interactions. Positive and relaxed social interactions are vital to developing self-confidence.
>
> Recreation and leisure skills: Youth who are blind are not fully included in physical education due to the heavy focus on ball sports. They must be taught accessible workouts to keep their bodies healthy. Now these youth can participate in the gym with everyone else!
>
> Career education exposure: Students met the founder of TRX, learning how he created the suspension straps and how it impacts the blind community. Students require education in a variety of career options as they are not able to view possible employment paths throughout their daily interactions as their sighted peers do.
>
> Sensory efficiency skills: This workshop required tactual discrimination and careful listening for multi-step directions. Honing these skills are vital to a student who lives with vision loss success. A person is not simply born with stronger senses, they must practice and develop them in a variety of surroundings in order to enhance them.
>
> Self-determination development: The benefits of exercises beyond physical strength are profound - it builds confidence, increases self-esteem, improves posture, and prompts better sleep. All areas which contribute to happy and well-balanced youth. Curated opportunities to practice self-determination are essential to youth who live with vision loss as they are not able to learn incidentally from watching others.

> Peninsula Guitar Series is giving out 25 guitars and free virtual music lessons to children, ages eight to twelve years, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. The lessons would take place once a week via Zoom video conferencing, which is free for students and teachers to download.
