Good morning!
Please see Bonnie’s email below... This is the study that she mentioned at last night’s meeting. I have signed up to participate in this myself - should be interesting.
It was great to see everyone last night! Have a wonderful weekend!

> Hi John, John and Brian. I have been asked to distribute the following information on a research study to determine the use of detectable warnings or other guidance surfaces at complex street crossings such as roundabouts or unusual intersections. They are looking for 20 participants who meet certain characteristics, described below. I have also attached and pasted below information about who is conducting the research and the funding.

> Greetings from the Study’s Assistant Recruiters, Colleen McNerney and Nina O’Neill.
> Are you interested in being a participant?
>
> The attached overview contains information about the national research study taking place in Old Town Alexandria between May 11th and May 16th.
>
> We are seeking people who are blind or have low vision to participate for a 90 minute exercise in street crossing under the guidance of the research team. Nina and I will interview you over the phone to gather basic information and answer any questions.
>
> Participants in the study will be asked to find and align to 6 roadway crossing situations, 3 with tactile guidance surfaces installed, and 3 without. The sites are in Alexandria, VA, near the King Street Metro in Old Town.
> Participants must:
> 1. Be unable to see crosswalk lines, curbs & poles in the travel environment.
> 2. Be comfortable using a long cane for the study, even if they normally use a dog guide.
> 3. Travel independently & cross streets at least a few times each week.
> 4. Have no limits to sensation in lower extremities or trouble with balance.
>
> -Participants will be provided with transportation to & from the study sites in Alexandria VA, and will be compensated with $50 for their time.
> -Participants will spend an hour and a half one day between May 11-16 working with the researchers between the hours of 9:30am to 6pm.
>
> You may be a guide dog user. The testing session, which focuses on street crossing, must be completed using your cane. We will have qualified people present to stay with your dog while you are engaged in the research exercise should you travel there with your dog.
>
>
> You may share my contact information with your friends & colleagues, and they can contact me directly, or you can give me contact information of people who are interested-whatever works best for you.
>
> Please contact one of us immediately and complete the phone interview. Deadline is Tuesday, April 24th. We both live in the Metro DC area.

> NIDILRR Research: Effect of guidance surfaces on individuals with vision impairments
>
> Description of project:
> This study is part of a research project for the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) titled The Effect of Guidance Surfaces on Travelers with Vision and Mobility Impairments. This study is being conducted by Western Michigan University (WMU) and Accessible Design for the Blind. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the use of guidance surfaces at certain types of complex intersections (roundabouts, channelized turn lanes, large radius corners, skewed intersections and others) to determine if the installation of such surfaces improve alignment and crossing by participants who are blind. The photo below shows the prototype ‘bar tile’ surface to be used in previous research.
>
> The research team for this project consists of Rob Wall Emerson, PhD, COMS, Western Michigan University, Janet Barlow, COMS, and Billie Louise (Beezy) Bentzen, PhD, COMS, Accessible Design for the Blind. This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Western Michigan University.
>
> Each participant in the research will receive an honorarium and reimbursement for transportation expenses. We expect to collect data on alignment and street crossings by 20 people in your city over the course of the study. Our plan is to collect data on 18 participants during our data collection visit of approximately one week. There will be two ‘pilot’ participants in addition to the 18.
