Dear AFSS members and friends:



Attached please find the Agenda for AFSS’ September 18th meeting.  We will
be discussing AFSS’ outreach activities with Alexandria City Public School
systems regarding safe street practices and review the joint City Vision
Zero staff / AFSS public outreach calendar of events planned over the next
two months.  In addition, we will provide an update on AFSS’ “Near Miss
Survey”, a data collection program to provide relatively real time
information to the City Staff and Police about dangerous intersections in
the hope that crashes can be avoided in high risk locations.  Last but
certainly not least, Professor Ralph Buehler, PhD,  Associate Professor in
Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech will be our guest speaker.
Professor Buehler will provide an overview of how other cities around the
world address the issue of pedestrian / cyclist safety and how Alexandria
might be able to apply some of these practices.



AFSS will be at the Del Ray Farmers Market this Saturday, Sept 15th
(weather permitting) where we will hand out safe street literature and
inform people about how the “Near Miss Survey” could help to make our
streets safer.  If you are at the market please stop by to say hello.  We
have a local restaurant gift card to give away to the 2nd AFSS friend who
stops by and mentions the gift card.



I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, Sept 18th at Chadwicks on Strand
Street.  The meeting starts sharply at 6:30 pm and will conclude by 8 pm.  Trea
Lamond, Chadwicks’ Manager/Owner, has generously offered to provide
appetizers and one free drink to all AFSS members and friends at the
event.  It will be helpful for Chadwicks to have a rough idea of how many
people can attend the meeting on the 18th.   Please email me if you plan to
join us on Tuesday evening so we can get a head count.  Thank you.
