The goal of the September 16, 2014 meeting of the NFBV Communications
Committee was to understand better the role of social media and how we might
be able to effectively leverage it to promote the affiliate.

Our program speaker was Chris O'Meally. Chris is well-known to owners of
Apple products like the IPhone, Ipad, etc. He has created several training
videos on how visually impaired and sighted alike can get the most out of
these devices. Chris explained several of the major social networking tools
like Facebook, YouTube, and twitter. Below are just a few notes on just a
few of the topics he covered.

Basically, Chris (who is blind and a member of the Richmond Chapter of the
NFBV) explained the differences between the social media outlets and which
ones are best for different situations. The social media outlet to use
depends on what the desired outcome is. They are not all equal or
interchangeable. Each has its strengths and weaknesses.

The one challenge the committee recognized is that no matter which outlet we
use, the most important thing is to have content to share. Social media is
for sharing and not having content of interest is a waste of effort because
no one will be interested in what you have to say.

Chris has no problem finding interesting content to share. . He has made
available to the Communications Committee and the NFBV a set of videos that
will assist newcomers to social media to not only understand what they are,
but how accessible they are too! Below is a short list of instructional
videos Chris has created just for us.

Overview to the Facebook App:
An app is a program that runs on an Apple device. Chris shows us the
Facebook app and explains some of the most commonly used commands for
connecting and sharing with your friends. The link is:

Overview of the Twitter App:
Twitter is a very popular method of communicating short messages real-time
to your friends and the world. Now, all that power is available to you on
your mobile Apple device and Chris shows you how to get started. The link to
this short video is:

The NFBV Communications Committee wishes to give a big thanks to Chris for
not only helping the committee to understand our social networking options.
But, to also thank him for sharing his knowledge with the organization
through his videos.

start at 8:00 PM. Everyone is invited to join us on the call. Conference
