Highlights of the NFB of Virginia 2014 Convention For Students & Parents
We have planned a remarkable program for the National Federation of the
Blind of Virginia Convention.
Here are some highlights for both parents and students:

•	Summer Jobs for Blind Teens - A Panel of Blind role models talking
about their High School Summer Jobs and how these experiences positioned
them for career success
•	What Blind Children and Youth Need to be Successful Adults- Garrick
Scott, President of the NFB of Georgia and a champion for blind youth will
share the skills blind youth need for success
•	BELL Success – Here from students who participated in this summer’s
two week BELL camps held across Virginia.
•	Braille Carnival – exciting hands on Friday evening carnival for
students of all ages.

Running parallel to the convention will be the 2014 Youth Track, presented
by the NFB of Virginia Students Division. The Youth Track will: connect
students with positive role models and their peers throughout the state;
challenge students to think about themselves and their role in the civil
rights movement; introduce students to our positive NFB philosophy on
blindness; educate students about their choices for blindness skills
training; and put these new experiences to work through a travel activity
outside the convention hotel.

This year, we want to highlight some of our activities at Youth Track:
•	Would You– A Thought Provoking workshop for students led by
successful blind role models. Challenge yourself to consider how your
actions and reactions impact how the world sees you as a successful student.
•	Student Division Luncheon – network with blind students from across
the Commonwealth and learn how you can help other students overcome
challenges.
•	Tour Hampton University as part of a great travel training
excursion.

Finally, for parents:
•	Parents Division Lunch- the Virginia Association of Parents of Blind
Students will meet to network, assist each other, and hone their advocacy
skills.

The National Federation of the Blind of Virginia conventioneds provide
excellent networking with positive blind role models, fellowship with old
and new friends across the Commonwealth, and some of the best presentations
on topics important to the blind of Virginia

The complete convention agenda will be available shortly.
