Hey NFB Family and Friends,

Please read below for day two of our Black Empowerment Committee's
information about African American's who made a difference. Enjoy and
please come back every day this month for more interesting people and their
stories.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a patent is "a writing securing
for a term of years the right to exclude others from making, using, or
selling an invention". The person assert said right is called a patentee.

Judy W. Reed was considered the first African American woman to receive a US
patent. Patent No. 305,474 for a "Dough Kneader and Roller" was granted
September 23, 1884. It was for an improved design of existing rollers with
dough mixing more evenly while being kept covered and protected. It is
unknown if she was able to read, write, or even sign her name, as her patent
is signed with an "X". Besides the patent registration, there are no other
records of Reed or her life.

Sarah E. Goode was the first African-American woman to fully sign a patent.
Her patent, 322,177 was granted on July 14, 1885. It was for a Cabinet-bed,
"that class of sectional bedsteads adapted to be folded together when not in
use, so as to occupy less space, and made generally to resemble some article
of furniture when so folded"

Thank You,

The Black Empowerment Committee Members

Peace,

Jacki Bruce
