Day 16

 

Thomas Wiggins, known as Blind Tom, was the first Black music star. While he
had a lucrative career but he did not see any of the profits. Blacks were
known as skilled instrumentalists and preferred over White musicians because
you didn't have to pay them. 

 

Before abolishing slavery, performances by Blacks were limited to dances and
social events and kept out were restricted to concert ventures where serious
music was played.

 

In 1860, Blind Tom performed at the White House before President James
Buchanan; he was the first African-American to give a command performance at
the White House.
