As an expectant parent, you know the life lesson that's being driven home
most keenly? It's the freedom the very young and the seniors among us enjoy
saying exactly what they want. When children or seniors say something
exceptionally blunt, we laugh and shrug it off as something endearing, or
chalk it up to: Oh, So and So is just being themselves. And life goes on,
but is there really no middle ground?

 

Let's reframe that a little.

 

When was the last time you went up to your chapter president and said, you
know, I'm getting tired of doing the same damn thing month after month.

 

Or, when was the last time you went up to one of your board members and
said: Hi, did you get diagnosed with a severe case of the Lazies? Because
you sure haven't been pulling your weight around here!

 

Of course, we all exercise tact. Few people are ever completely unfiltered,
but in the process of being too polite, too cautious, are we missing the
opportunity to help our leaders make the experience better for everyone and
perhaps help them grow as leaders in the process?

 

These observations are equally applicable to the workplace, relationships,
and most other daily interactions.

 

I'd like you to consider joining us Saturday, October 30 from 3 to 5 PM.

 

Let's strike up that open dialogue. I'm going to bring in presenters to
speak to specific areas of leadership, but the presentations are only half
the equation. The candid questions and comments you pose will be what truly
makes this block move from one more boring leadership seminar to a seminar
that gets you thinking, no matter what spectrum of the leadership range you
currently serve.

 

So much of what we do in the Chapter Leadership Institute is meet the
individual where they are and help build them up, not by shaping them into
someone they are not but by helping them recognize the confidence they
already possessed. I know that sounds very cookie cutter, but I'm demanding
my presenters think outside the box and make this as interactive as a
virtual platform will allow. What I ask of you is to show up with an open
mind and speak from your core. If you ask silly questions that do nothing to
deepen the conversation, then you're going to get shallow results. I'd like
you to help me avoid that. You could be doing a thousand other things on a
Saturday afternoon. Help me make this as good of a seminar as we can.

 

You wont' hear from me again until after the convention is over. Let me take
this last chance to encourage you to register and tune in. Tell your friends
about it. Take a look at the agenda, pick at least three sessions you're
curious about. Hopefully one of the sessions will be the leadership seminar,
but if not, pick something you think might resonate. This is completely
about what lights your fire, because that's what's going to propel you
forward in this movement in general and in this affiliate in particular.
