Fellow Federationists:

Our 2021 state convention will be held at the end of October culminating
over the weekend of October 29 - 31. One of the most important parts of our
convention involves reading and discussing resolutions sent in by our
affiliate members. Resolutions are policy statements of the affiliate, and
we welcome them from our members.

Purpose of Resolutions:

As a grass roots organization, our members are the primary source of ideas
for our policies and programs. There are many people who have ideas which we
might consider as potential policy statements for the NFB of Virginia. Also,
resolutions help spark conversations about vital issues we face as Virginia
Federationists.

How to Submit a Resolution

If you have an idea for a resolution but need assistance in drafting one,
please contact me as soon as possible, no later than Friday October 15, so
that we have enough time to draft the resolution before convention. If you
would like to submit a drafted resolution, please submit your draft to me by
October 22. This allows the members of the Resolutions Committee the
opportunity to review the resolutions in advance of the October 29
Resolutions Committee meeting.

Here is a link to an article from the Braille Monitor on how to draft a
resolution, with helpful information on what role resolutions play in the
NFB, what happens after a resolution is passed, etc.

Many people are intimidated by resolutions because they have a complex
structure with all those awkward whereas statements. However, once you get
the hang of it, it's pretty simple.

How to Speak in Support or Opposition to a Resolution

This year, the procedure for speaking on a resolution will be a bit
different, since it will be hybrid. See below on this procedure:

*	Resolutions being recommended to the Convention by the committee
will be posted to the web at http://www.nfbv.org/resolutions by 8:00 p.m.
EDT or three hours after the committee meeting (whichever is later) on
Friday, October 29, 2021.
*	Those wishing to speak for or against a resolution on the floor of
the Convention must submit their interest in doing so by sending an email to
resolutions at nfbv.org <mailto:resolutions at nfbv.org> by 5:30 p.m. EDT on
Saturday, October 30. The email must contain the individual's full name,
chapter name, the number of the resolution they wish to discuss, whether
they are for or against the resolution, and a phone number where they can
best be reached in case there is an issue with the Zoom platform.

Thank you for your willingness to contribute to setting our organizational
policies and we look forward to your ideas.

Deepinder K. Goraya, Esq.

NFB of Virginia Resolutions committee Chair
