Board Meeting Minutes

August 6, 2022

Nancy Yeager read the meeting minutes from our May 7 board meeting.

It was also announced that Mausam Mehta, current NFB of Virginia recording
secretary, will not be seeking reelection in October.

The minutes were approved.

Mark Roane read the treasurer's report, stating the affiliate's general
checking balance as $109822.97.

The report was approved.

Jacob Ham read the scholarship committee report, stating that our 3
scholarship amounts have been raised to $2500. The scholarship deadline is
Monday, September 26.

Joe Orozco read the reports for several key initiatives:

I. Chapter Leadership Institute: the cohort will take part
in a collection of hybrid activities.

II. Project Rise: the program continues to recruit students
from around the state. Leadership has shifted, with Joe Orozco as
coordinator, and Jackie Bruce and Julia Ford as assistant program
coordinators. Applications for Rise mentors are available on the nfb.org
website.

III. Silver Bells: the program has been a success, exposing
several seniors to positive blindness philosophy from around VA. There will
be three sessions, on the last Saturdays of the month, from February to
April.

Tracy began the discussion of our state convention.

I. Nature of the convention: we considered the options of a
completely in-person convention, an in-person convention with a limited
virtual experience, and a hybrid convention. We decided by vote to conduct
an in-person convention with a limited virtual experience.

II. Voting: we considered the options of collecting votes
only from those in person or voting by telephone for all involved. The board
decided to run elections and voting on resolutions utilizing the
phone/text-based voting system.

III. Health and safety: we voted to approve Joe Orozco's motion
to offer Covid precautions at convention, including masks, accessible tests,
etc., but we will not be requiring attendees to submit proof of vaccination
or a negative test in advance. The details on our COVID health and safety
steps will be posted to our convention landing page.

IV. Potential ideas for convention programming: Latin-themed
hospitality night on Friday, costume party banquet, basic fitness
instruction, haunted house, inter faith breakfast on Sunday morning

V. Pricing: affiliate will provide banquet ticket,
registration, boxed lunches, chocolate tasting, and inter faith Sunday
breakfast for fixed price of $30 per person upon the condition of
pre-registration by October 10

VI. Fundraising ideas: coin-holders, horse race, 2 fifty-fifty
raffles, 1 at the board meeting and 1 at the banquet

VII. Convention committees: audit, resolutions, nomination,
details to come

We heard committee and division reports, outlining initiatives from across
the state.

Respectfully submitted,

Mausam Mehta

Recording Secretary
