This convention highlight message focuses on topics for students and
parents.

 

College Students should consider applying for our scholarships no later than
9/26/2022. All qualifying applicants will receive support to attend the
convention.

Below, we will highlight opportunities throughout our convention weekend.


Friday, October 28


 

*	Virginia Association of Blind Students Dinner Party and Meeting -
Join the Virginia student division leaders and members for fellowship with
old and new friends to kick off the convention weekend. Open and free to all
students. Expect interactive icebreakers, engaging discussion, and a brief
business meeting. During the meeting portion, our members will elect the
officers and board members for the upcoming year, as well as reflect and
brainstorm on the work of our statewide division.
*	Latin Night - Immerse yourself in our evening celebration of Latin
food, music, and dance.
*	Check Out the latest in Technology, Products and Services - Our
exhibit hall will connect you with technology leaders, services catered to
our needs, and exciting opportunities from organizations across Virginia. 

 


Saturday, October 29


 

*	Student Success - Hear how one of our Virginia and national student
leaders, Mausam Mehta, is achieving her dreams and serving as a role model
based on lessons from our Virginia Federation community.
*	Taming the Shark - An Introduction to the JAWS Screen Reader for
Students ages 10-22 and their Parents. We have partnered with

<https://www.alliedinstructional.com/> Allied Instructional Services to
offer a hands on training with the Job Access with Speech
<https://www.freedomscientific.com/products/software/jaws/> (JAWS) screen
reader. This interactive training features instructors who use the software
and can relate to your training needs, supplemental training resources, and
hands on exercises. We even have some surprises. For details, go to

*	Conquer Vispero's Accessible Escape Room - This casino themed, team
building activity allows you to have fun while solving puzzles together. And
no, we do not lock you in.
*	Flex your mind and muscles in our self-defense, yoga, and cardio
fitness workshops - Learn the techniques and strategies to engage in fitness
at a health club or in your local community   in the morning General Session
then apply these techniques in fitness and self-defense classes in the
afternoon. Bring clothes to exercise  so you can enjoy one of our three
class options.
*	Find out about fun year-round and summer mentoring, skill building,
and social programs we offer across Virginia and across the country.
*	Hear from 3 blind teachers on how they deliver instruction and
manage the classroom.

*	Costume Banquet - The Saturday Evening Banquet is a highlight of the
convention featuring an inspiring address from National Federation of the
Blind Executive Director for Advocacy and Policy, John Pare. This year's
banquet will be a costume party so feel free to express yourself and share
your creativity. Our roving reporters will come by to conduct brief
interviews so be ready to share your costume details

 


Sunday, October 30


 

*	Inter-Faith Breakfast - How can your faith community provide you
opportunities to build your network, try new skills, and grow your
leadership? Join us for this engaging breakfast and learn from role models
who are fully participating in their local organizations.
*	The future of Access Technology Training- You already know that the
way we learn is changing dramatically. What is the future of how you learn
skills and access technology in our Web 3 world? We have brought leaders and
instructors who are driving these trends to share the path forward and
address questions.
*	NABS Update - Across the country, blind and low vision students are
creating opportunities and helping students advocate. Learn about the
accomplishments of your national student organization and how you can help
drive our future together.

 

While parents of Blind Children are invited to participate in many of the
above events, we are also running a specific session for parents

 

*	Saturday Virginia Parents of Blind Children Luncheon and Business
Meeting- 

Grab the boxed lunch or bring your own, but please join us for our business
meeting and parents' lunch.  Our lunch hour is an informal roundtable
conversation for parents of children of all ages with low vision, blindness,
deaf-blindness, and multiple disabilities. We will also hold a 10-15-minute
business meeting.  

 

 

 

The National Federation of the Blind of Virginia Convention combines
excellent networking with positive blind role models, fellowship with old
and new friends across the Commonwealth, and some of the best presentations
on topics important to the blind of Virginia
