Hey NFB family and Friends,

I hope everyone is doing alright and hoping everyone has their smiles on!
Please be sure to read the new section, Information You Can Use, in this
email. Please let me know your thoughts on this section. The information
this week has a short response time, in some cases, (I will be sending this
email separately beginning next week). While doing outreach for Silver
Bells and RISE I’ve had the opportunity to meet several new people who have
been willing to share their knowledge and contacts with me. I’m of the
belief knowledge is power so I’m sharing. Please feel free to do the same!

Spotlight On

Federation family,

I wanted to update everybody on Jim's progress. Unfortunately he had to go
back into the intensive care unit on Monday, February 27, 2023.

His pressures had dropped and they had to resuscitate him and put him back
on the ventilator with the trach. This morning, March 11 the nurse called me
and advised that he had been moved to a regular room.

He is definitely talking again with the trach and speaking valve and they
will move forward again with his speech therapist to help with his
swallowing. The main goal is to get the trach off and the bedsore Healed
up. They did a procedure to get the bedsore fixed.

I was able to visit him last week. This definitely has been one heck of a
roller coaster ride and I want to thank everybody for hanging in there with
us.

Much love to you all and please keep Jim in your prayers.

President, Winchester Chapter

Greetings everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well. If you use Paratransit service provided by
Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) you do not want to miss our next Tidewater
Chapter meeting. We are scheduled to have Mr. Keith Johnson, Director of
Paratransit services for HRT at this meeting. This follows our previous
chapter meeting where we met with Norfolk City Councilwoman Andria
McClellan who is one of Norfolk City representatives to the HRT board. She
listened to what we had to say about transit services and passed them on to
the CEO of HRT. This will be a great chance to find out what is new in
transit and let Mr. Johnson know our concerns and suggestions for
improvements. Our meeting is set for Saturday, March 18, 2022 from 2-3:30
PM in person at Ynot Italian Restaurant, 1517 Colley Ave., Norfolk, VA 23517
and on Zoom (details in the Chapter Information below.). We gather for
lunch at 1 PM before the meeting. Please let me know if you will be joining
us in person by Thursday, March 16 at 12 Noon so that I can let the
restaurant know how many people to expect. My contact information is at the
bottom of this message. I look forward to seeing many of you at our
meeting!

--- Forwarded Message---

You can help us solve a new issue in street crossing. Street designs
continue to evolve resulting in new challenges for blind pedestrians.

The UNC Highway Safety Research Center in conjunction with Accessible Design
for the Blind is looking for volunteers who are blind to participate in a
study on the accessibility of Quick Build Bulb-Outs in the D. C. area. We
want to find out whether different wayfinding cues like tactile surfaces, or
vertical delineators such as plastic posts or raised surfaces that you can
feel under foot or with your cane, improve accessibility of quick-build
bulb-outs for people with little or no vision. Quick-build bulb-outs are
areas of the street at a crosswalk that are marked with paint and/or
flexible posts to show that the area is no longer available for motor
vehicle use. This area is considered an extension of the sidewalk at
street-level and is the appropriate place for pedestrians to wait to cross
the street. This relatively quick and cheap change is made in order to
shorten the length of the crosswalk and to improve drivers' ability to see
pedestrians waiting to cross. Quick-build bulb-outs may also slow traffic.

We are looking for experienced travelers who are comfortable using a long
cane, who regularly travel independently outdoors, and who would be willing
to participate in the research. If you decide to take part in the study, you
will be asked to approach and cross several streets many times. The
intersection does not have an accessible pedestrian signal but the mobility
specialist with you will tell you when the WALK sign comes on. Compensation
is $75 and travel to the study area can be reimbursed.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please call me at
301-412-4224 or email me at: mbcleveland at fastmail.net
<mailto:mbcleveland at fastmail.net> to find out if you are eligible for the
study.
