Louis Braille Coin

The Braille system, a reading and writing system for people who are blind or
visually impaired. The most notable version of this coin was released by the
United States Mint in 2009 to celebrate the bicentennial (200th anniversary)
of Louis Braille's birth in 1809. Here are some key details about the coin:

1. Design Features: 

    .    Obverse (Front): Features a portrait of Louis Braille based on a
painting of him. His name, "Louis Braille," is engraved along with the words
"Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "1809-2009."    

 .    Reverse (Back): Displays a child reading a Braille book with the word
"Braille" written above in Braille characters. It was the first U.S. coin to
feature readable Braille characters.     .    Edge: The edge of the coin is
smooth.  

2. Composition and Denomination: 

    .    It is a commemorative silver dollar coin made from 90% silver and
10% copper. 

    .    The coin has a face value of one dollar but holds a higher
collectible value.

3. Purpose: 

    .    Issued to raise awareness and funds for programs supporting
literacy for the blind. 

    .    A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the coin went to the
National Federation of the Blind. 

4. Minting Information: 

    .    The coin was minted in both proof and uncirculated versions. 

    .    It was minted at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin remains popular
among collectors and those with an interest in disability rights history.
