Hey NFB Family and Friends,

Welcome to another edition of Member to Member! Today we’ll get to know Dana
Lengyel, from our Greater Williamsburg Chapter.

Dana has been a part of our NFBV Family since July of 2022. She is the wife
of the President, Mike, and she has been an active member of the chapter.
Dana is the chair of the transportation committee, she has been chapter
secretary, she is on the nominating committee and has fund raised and
participated in the chapters yearly walk, during BEAM, in October. She has
attended and participated in our state convention and she and Mike plan to
attend national, for the first time, next year.

Dana loves reading she says “a good book can really suck me in!” Dana
enjoys baking, especially sugar cookies “that’s what I bring whenever a dish
is needed.” She is really into lighthouses and says visiting them is her
biggest interest/hobby. In fact, she and Mike recently visited the Fairport
Harbor Lighthouse, in Gainesville, Ohio. “it was built in1871 and it
overlooks Lake Erie” she says. “Most of the time, I climb to the top, no
matter how many stairs there are, and Mike hangs right there with me” Dana
chuckles. She also loves the ocean and traveling. In fact her bucket list
has a few destinations on it; doing a cruise to Europe and Alaska are the
top two and if she were given an all expense trip, she’d go to one or the
other of them.

Dana is the middle of three children, she has a brother and a sister; her
Mom is one of ten! She grew up in the same house her Mom grew up in. She
went to the same high school as her Mom and Cousins. “In fact, my Mom was in
the first graduating class! The school has been torn down now.” She and
Mike grew up ½ miles from each other and never knew it, for the longest
time. She and Mike have one son, Brandon. Dana received her Bachelors
Degree, in advertising and communications, from Youngstown State. “I think
my NFB Family would be surprised to know I can sing in Croatian. I’ve been
singing and dancing since I was little! I’ve sang in church and at funerals.
Music has been a part of my family always, playing an instrument, singing
and/or dancing was, almost, mandatory!” She has been to Croatia three times,
her Mom is Croatian.

As the wife of a low vision person, Dana struggles with patience. “Getting
to the new normal takes time and effort. Mike just graduated from Richmond
Center. He has worked hard and is practicing his learned skills every day.
It’s just, sometimes, I want everything NOW! The process is long and
grueling, for both of us but especially for Mike. I’m so proud of him but I
know we still have a long road ahead of us.”

One of Dana’s fondest memories is a trip she took with Mike and Brandon to
Lake Placid. They took a bob sled ride, “we had a blast! Brandon was
screaming with delight the whole way down! We still talk about that trip.”
If you couldn’t tell by now, family is very important to Dana; if she had
one wish, she would love to have her brother and sister live near her for at
least a year.

Thanks, Dana, its been great getting to know you more. Stay tuned for
another Member to Member next week.

Peace,

Jacki Bruce
