Hi NFB Family and Friends,
Welcome to another edition of Member to Member! Today we'll get to know John
Covici, from the At Large Chapter and now the Greater Loudoun Chapter.
John has been a part of our NFBV Family since 2020. He is a mover and a
shaker and has been chatting up the NFB and organizing people to become
members since his first day with us! If you've met John, you've heard about
what a phenomenal organization we belong to.
John thinks transportation is a huge issue for all of us and he'd like to
see his chapter be more involved in his community and statewide to bridge
the transportation needs of our members.
John is from THE CITY, New York that is. He graduated from the Institute for
the Blind and then graduated from the University of Detroit with a major in
Physics. In the early 70's, John got interested in computers and off he went
in a new career. John is a geek, he is very interested in technology and
when he's not talking about the NFB or computers, John is talking/debating
about politics! He can tell you about all of the goings on in our
government, up to the minute! John believes "if the country is doing well,
everyone should be doing well; Everyone, not just people with disabilities.
I'd like to see our country get back to stability, more people doing
manufacturing, the basics." John came to Virginia, thru Leesburg and
Sterling, in 1984 for business and stayed. He says "it's a different world
now, I had readers in college and now I do everything with technology."
At the moment, John is living in an assisted living facility and says "it's
frustrating working with people who don't understand blindness. People who
move things around and don't let me know. I'm very independent and have been
doing things for myself my whole life! This, however, can be frustrating."
John is into classical music and has many fond memories of classical music
concerts. He warmly says "I've seen some of the greats, legends in classical
music!" He would like to go to a Bach Festival, "three or four days immersed
in Bach, WOW!"
One of his bucket list items is to visit Bethlehem. It's the first place he
would go if given an all expenses paid vacation. He would also like to visit
Italy, especially Florence. He would like to see the Duomo, a cathedral
dome, which is still the largest brick and mortar building in the world!
John, is a HAM, no he doesn't preen in front of the camera, he's an amateur
radio operator. "I've enjoyed this hobby and like talking with other HAMS"
Thanks John, it's been great getting to know you better. Stay tuned for
another member to member next week.
Peace,
Jacki Bruce
