[NFBV-Announce] Special Invitation: RE: reminder to submit ideas for resolutions and draft resolutions

We have an exciting announcement for this month's Chapter Leadership
Institute call tomorrow, and this one is a little different. We're opening
our doors wider this time around, and all members of the National Federation
of the Blind of Virginia are welcome to join us.

Our guest speaker is Sharon Maneki, and if you've spent any time following
NFB at the national level, her name needs no introduction. Sharon served for
many years as president of the National Federation of the Blind of Maryland,
and she is perhaps best known nationally for her long tenure as chair of the
NFB Resolutions Committee. Year after year, she stood at the helm of that
committee, guiding the process through which our organization's most
important policy commitments take shape. The Braille Monitor described her
as the longtime chair of the resolutions committee, and noted that her
annual performance left no doubt as to why she held that role.

Sharon's contributions stretch well beyond the committee room. She served as
a board member of the Maryland Library for the Blind and Print Disabled,
including a term as president of that board. She retired after a
distinguished 27-year career as a research analyst for the Department of
Defense, and she is also a published author of two books. This past July,
Maryland Governor Wes Moore presented Sharon with the Governor's Disability
Culture and Achievement Award in recognition of her decades of advocacy on
behalf of blind, DeafBlind, and low vision Marylanders.

On this call, Sharon is going to walk us through three things that every
chapter leader and engaged member should understand: how to identify issues
that are worthy of becoming NFB resolutions, how to write a resolution that
is clear, well-grounded, and positioned to pass, and how to do the
follow-through work that ensures a resolution actually leads to change once
the convention gavel comes down.

Resolutions are not just formalities. They are, as Sharon herself has
written, a call to collective action by the members. They define what we
stand for and set the direction for our advocacy in the year ahead. If
you've ever wondered how an idea becomes federation policy, or if you want
to sharpen your skills as a chapter leader and advocate, this is a
conversation you won't want to miss.

Hello everyone,

A friendly reminder that if you have an idea for a resolution but need
assistance in drafting one, please contact me as soon as possible, no later
than Friday, September 25, so that we have enough time to draft the
resolution before convention. If you would like to submit a drafted
resolution, please submit your draft to me by Friday, October 2. This allows
the members of the Resolutions Committee the opportunity to review the
resolutions in advance of the Resolutions Committee meeting. The Resolutions
Committee meeting will be held on Friday, October 23.

Please note: The proponent of any resolution must be present  in person to
speak on behalf of the resolution at the Resolutions Committee meeting on
Friday and at the NFB of Virginia Business meting on Sunday.

Many people are intimidated by resolutions because they have a complex
structure with all those awkward whereas statements. However, once you get
the hang of it, it's pretty simple.

How to Speak in Support or Opposition to a Resolution

1.	Resolutions being recommended to the Convention by the committee
will be posted to the web at http://www.nfbv.org/resolutions by 8:00 p.m.
EDT on Friday, October 23, or three hours after the committee meeting
(whichever is later).
2.	Those wishing to speak for or against a resolution on the floor of
the Convention must be present in person Sunday morning(October 25) during
General Session where Resolutions are discussed. Those who are attending
virtually and who wish to argue for or against a resolution should find a
friend who can speak on their behalf. We will only entertain comments in
favor or opposition to a resolution from those attending in person.
