There are at least four extremely important reasons to attend the Greater Fredericksburg Area Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia's November 19 meeting at 10:00 in the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, 1101 Caroline Street. First, we will have an outstanding speaker on a topic of timely concern. Marilee Kenlon, one of our own members, is a certified instructor in the One Touch Method of self-defense. She will demonstrate this method for us. Unfortunately, this continues to be a topic of prime interest because, even in the greater Fredericksburg area, crime is an ever present factor.

Second, our social committee is ready to tell us about our annual winter holiday party planned for next month. We want you to have this information in time to make plans so as many people as possible can attend.

Third, it is time to make plans for the new year. Kimberly Walko, our vice president, presented a creative and interesting compromise for our consideration. She suggested keeping our Saturday morning meeting time for the winter, but meeting on a week night during the summer months. Meeting on Saturday mornings in the winter would permit us to travel during the hours of warmth and sunlight. Week night meetings during the summer months would be less likely to interfere with day time plans so many people make at that time of the year. We want all our members to feel included, wanted and needed.

Finally, we will hear from some of our members who attended our state convention in Virginia Beach. Please check at the library desk to find out in which room we are meeting. We are scheduled for meeting room 1, but that could change. I hope, for example, a larger room might become available and that we will need it! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, I invite and urge you to contact me. If your issue might require lengthy discussion or be controversial, I respectfully ask you to make me aware of it before the meeting to insure it receives the most appropriate attention. I genuinely look forward to having as many people as possible at Saturday's meeting.
