Meeting Minutes for September 13, 2018
President Halverson called the meeting to order at 7:02PM
Minutes from the August Meeting were Approved
Philosophy
Philosophy discussion was led by Sarah Blumberg
When does assistive technology become more of a hindrance than a help? Chapter members expressed that technology has benefits but technology should be a compliment to blindness skills not a substitute. and the key is finding the right technology for the given situation
Treasurer's report was read and approved
* Beginning balance: $816.09
* Ending balance: $1722.09
Sarah Patnaude made an announcement that she will be creating a group to call members on the affiliate membership list to personally invite them to convention
State Convention
Tracy gave a report on State Convention
* October 1 is the deadline to let John Halverson know if you would like to take the bus
* There are several volunteer opportunities
* Career programming: talk to Kathryn
* Senior Programming: talk to Nancy
* Younger students/ Braille Carnival
* Sean volunteered to plan a group taking the VRE to convention
Project RISE
Project RISE report by Tracy
* Northern Virginia has approximately 22 students signed up
* First session was held on September 8th at the Halverson's home. John and Sandy reported that students really seemed to enjoy each others' company and students were already excited about what they are going to learn. Students have already grown in confidence, for example students who were afraid of cooking were using ovens and cutting up vegetables Nick echoed these sentiments saying that Project RISE provides students with a nudge to step outside their comfort zone and what they think is possible as a blind individual
Kathryn announced that there is an Orioles game on Tuesday September 18th that will highlight the NFB. Members can get complimentary tickets if interested. Jerseys will have Braille and Sharon Maneki will be given an award.
The Chapter Octoberfest was discussed. Members voted to hold the Octoberfest on October 20 at the Halverson's. Members will bring a dish to share. Naim and Nick volunteered to co-chair planning.
A committee, chaired by Kathryn, was formed to plan a Meet the Blind Month activity.
Sarah Blumberg gave an update on the Social Committee.
* Sarah will look into the accessible tours of Library of Congress.
* On September 23, members are invited to take a tour of the Mosaic District. Members can meet at the Target at 1:00PM.
Announcements
Naim made an announcement about the Prince William Chapter Hike which will take place on Saturday 22 at 10AM.
The Virginia Association of Blind Students is doing a Bowl with the Blind in Virginia Beach on October 6. Transportation is arranged for $60 per person. Bowling will cost $10.
Kathryn made an announcement that Project RISE needs volunteers for the October and December sessions
