Colleagues,

Below are the minutes for the April 2019 Potomac Chapter meeting.

John Halverson, President

PCNFB Chapter Minutes for April 11, 2019

The Monthly meeting of the Potomac Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind was convened at 7 p.m. by President John Halverson. Seventeen members were present.

The icebreaker was what is your favorite board game or TV game show??

We had a moment of silence.

The NFB pledge was led and recited by Sarah Patnaude .

The minutes of the March 14, , 2019 meeting were discussed and accepted with just minor adjustments.

Treasurer's report for the period from 04/10/2019 to 05/09/2019
General Fund:
Beginning Balance: $3,140.13
Ending Balance: $1,159.50
Youth fund: Unchanged $1,750.00

Philosophy
President John Halverson read an article about an ophthalmologist who has put out an ad about being able to allow an individual who has macular degeneration to read and drive a car again. The ad also said that if the doctor is unable to make your eyesight better, then he would not charge.
Some members said that they would want the ophthalmologist to give them info about rehabilitation because one's sight does not need to be restored in order for the person to be able to read. We would always want for a newly blinded person to meet the National Federation of the Blind first before they begin to go doctor shopping and spending all their resources. Sometimes thers"cures or treatments" give false hope to parents because they want their child to "see."

Elections
Patty Droppers presented the slate for officers and these positions are only for a year.

2nd VP: Deepa Goraya

Congratulations to the newly elected board!

Technology Fair
Nancy Yeager is coordinating the Technology Fair which will be taking place on Saturday, June 22nd from 10am-2pm at the Lyon Village Community House in Arlington which is only ten minutes away from the Clarendon metro station. This event is for adults who are blind and visually impaired. This programming is for families of individuals who are blind, professionals in the field of blindness, etc. There will be various tech products that will be demoed such as iPad's, Apple Watch, video description, Newsline, medical devices, online grocery shopping apps and Nancy is seeking more volunteers to demo other products and services like Android.

Presidential Release
President Riccabono discussed the latest NY protest in the movie industry since blind people are not being casted in blind roles and sighted individuals are being casted instead; blind people are being underrepresented.
The national convention is around the corner and there's just a little more time to apply for the Kenneth Jernigan scholarship for first-time conventioneers to help offset convention costs. Membership is a vehicle for engaging the members and to check on members that have fallen off the radar and we would like to remind those members that are still a value. Why we use the word blind to describe all people with severe vision loss.
It's time to nominate a teacher that deserves being a Distinguished Educator who exemplifies the philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind.

Announcements
Kathryn is encouraging those who need financial assistance for the banquet for national convention can send an email to both John Halverson and Kathryn Webster no later than May 19th indicating the reason for the financial assistance. You must first purchase your banquet ticket and provide a copy of the receipt.

Kathryn announced that there will be a spring Picnic at the Halverson Home on Saturday, April 27th from 4pm-7pm.

The Potomac Chapter has decided to give $300 to each of the funds except $100 for NFB Camp.

President John Halverson wants to have a board meeting really soon.

Affiliate board meeting will be taking place on Saturday, May 18th in Richmond.

Wishing all the Mothers a very Happy Mother's Day!

Yours in the Federation

Respectfully submitted,
Evelyn Valdez
