September Wine Event - Tasting Notes
White Wines

  1. Pine Ridge Vineyards - Chenin Blanc / Viognier 2018, Napa Valley 2018, $14.99

Straw yellow in color. Aromas of summer jasmine, honeyed pears, and spice lead to flavors of tropical fruits like guava, papaya, and kiwi, complemented by melons, fresh apples, and lemon-lime.

Cheese Pairing: Brie Cheese. Brie is a soft cow’s milk cheese, named after Brie, the French region from which it originated. It is pale in color in color, with a white rind, which is typically eaten.

  1. Santa Barbara Winery - Sauvignon Blanc, 2017, Santa Ynez Valley, $17.99

Very pale straw color. Citrus led nose, lemon, green apple with a bit of honeydew melon. On the palate, green apple but lemon leads the way for this nice Sauvignon Blanc.

Cheese Pairing: Goat Cheese. Goat cheese is a white, soft, tangy cheese. Note that cow’s milk and goat’s milk have similar fat contents; however, goat’s milk has more fatty acids, which contributes to the tart taste of goat cheese.

  1. Qupe – Chardonnay Y Block, 2016, Santa Barbara County, $18.99

Slightly sour Meyer-lemon-pith aromas meet with honeysuckle and yellow pear on the nose of this wine. There is a strong sizzle of acidity on the palate, where green-apple flavors meet with tart nectarine and notes of lime-peel. Very fresh and food-friendly.

Cheese Pairing: Gruyere Cheese. Gruyere is a hard yellow Swiss cheese<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheeses_of_Switzerland> that originated in the cantons of Fribourg<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canton_of_Fribourg>, Vaud<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaud>, Neuchâtel<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canton_of_Neuch%C3%A2tel>, Jura<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canton_of_Jura>, and Berne<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canton_of_Bern> in Switzerland<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland>. It is named after the town of Gruyères<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gruy%C3%A8res>. Gruyère is sweet but slightly salty, with a flavor that varies widely with age. It is often described as creamy and nutty when young, becoming more assertive, earthy, and complex as it matures.

September Wine Event - Tasting Notes

Red Wines

  1. Etude Winery - Lyric Pinot Noir, 2016, Santa Barbara County $19.99

Vibrant ruby color. Nose of Bing cherry, raspberry, floral and subtle oak. On the palate, tastes of strawberry and raspberry, along with sweet notes of cloves and cinnamon round out this wine. Good balance.

Cheese Pairing: Parrano. Parano cheese is a cows milk cheese produced in the Netherlands. It tastes mild and nutty, combining salty and sweet flavors. Combining the flavor of aged parmesan<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parmesan> with a pliant texture, Parrano is marketed as an Italian<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy>-style cheese.

2. The Rubus Project (Kysela), Old Vines Zinfandel, 2017, Lodi, CA 2017, $10.99

Ruby red in color, with red fruit of raspberry and strawberry with spice on the nose. On the palate flavors of ripe cherry, cedar box, cinnamon, black pepper, and hint of smoke on the palate. It has a long, smooth finish.

Cheese Pairing: Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese. This cheddar cheese is a hard cheese, off-white in color. Cheddar originated in the English village of Cheddar in Somerset. Cheddar made in the classical way tends to have a sharp, pungent flavor, often slightly earthy. The "sharpness" of cheddar is associated with the levels of bitter peptides in the cheese. Cheddar is the second most popular cheese in the US after mozzarella.

  1. Oak Farm Vineyards, Tievoli, Red Blend, 2017, Lodi, CA $16.99,

A deep red color. This wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Barbera. Aromas of layered complexity of dark red fruits with similar flavors of blackberry and black currant with notes of vanilla spice. This blend is bold in flavor, but maintains a nice balanced and smooth finish.

Chocolate Pairings: Two types of dark chocolate with 57% cocoa content. One type has cherries, the other has sea salt. The deep chocolate flavor complements the bold taste of the Red Blend wine.
