The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams.

MINUTES OF THE WINCHESTER
CHAPTER OF THE N.F.B.

March 19, 2022

The meeting was called to order by President Chris Walker at 10:01 AM.
including members and guests, there were 12 folks present .

James Shobert led our members in the NFB Pledge.

We had an Ice-breaker minute, introducing ourselves. We were asked to
give one word that we thought would describe us.

At this time, we gave our Guest speaker Nathan Green, time to
introduce himself and tell about the program he was involved with.
Before losing his eyesight, he was a professional marshal arts
instructor. Wanting to to continue in this field, he began looking
for an organization to join. He found a group that went by the
acronym, SEED... Safety Education Empowering Defense.

For the most part, it trains folks to avoid violence in situations
that seem to be headed in that direction. He will work with Chris to
see if enough folks in our area were interested in this training, to
form a class. Because of his interest in blind issues, he stayed with
the meeting after his talk.

Wayne Williams told us that he was leaving for New York to enroll in
guide dog training. He will be gone for around a month and will be
returning with a guide dog. We wished him well and said he and his
dog would be welcome at the Apple Blossom Parade.

Janet Lincoln read the minutes from the January meeting. There was
one correction. Jacki Brown said that the Low vision group she was
working on at Wesminster Canterbury was not exactly new. It was
originally an idea begun by Ann Cook and her late husband Charlie.
Otherwise, the minutes were approved as read.

Jim Walker gave the Financial Report for February. It was approved.

The subject of the Lion's Club Golf Tournament came up. After
discussion, we approved a contribution of $500. Since this level of
contribution included two entrance tickets to play golf, Wayne
Williams and James Shobert said they would give the sport a try.
Wayne said they would need a ball spotter to help finding their balls.
Jim Walker said he would contact the officials to make sure this was
acceptable.

Plans for the Apple Blossom Parade were discussed. They are
progressing and We have a float reserved and the Walkers have seen it.
It is already decorated and all it needs is our banners attached to
the sides.

The float will seat about 20 folks, and we need to see who wants a
seat. Only after all our members have one, will we send out a call to
other Chapters to see if they want to ride along. Though most of the
expenses have already been covered, we approved Chris and Jim Walker
writing checks to deal with anything else that turned up. Chris will
send out notices when he knows more.

Chris told us that he will be speaking at a Lions Club Meeting on
March 29th. The meeting will be at the Winchester Moose Lodge.

We needed a fourth Board Member, and an Alternate Delegate. After
some discussion, James Shobert was elected for these positions.

Jacki gave a report on how the low vision groupe at Wesminster
Canterbury was progressing. They had 12 folks show up at the last
meeting. Nearly all needed help with tips&tricks for dealing with
vision loss. Most were unaware of adaptive technology for the blind.

It was suggested that Jacki contact Sarah Corridon, The Low vision Co-coordinator with the Valley Health System. She might not be able to meet with the group because of COVID restrictions, but she would still be a source for advice.

All this spun into a free-style discussion of various technology for
the blind, that only increased as Chris tried to call for adjournment
of the meeting.

The meeting adjourned at around 11:30 AM.

Respectively submitted,
Jim Green
Recording Secretary
