Route 542 starts Monday

If you're looking for a new and reliable way across Lake Washington, check
out ST Express bus Route 542.

Starting Monday, Route 542 buses will run from the Redmond Transit Center
through the SR520 corridor to the University District and the I-5/Northeast
65th Street Park-and-Ride in Seattle. The route serves major employment
centers in Redmond and the University of Washington.

Buses run every 15 minutes on weekdays in both directions from 6 a.m. to 10
a.m. and from about 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The new route will be able to handle
the expected increase in ridership when vehicle tolling begins on the 520
bridge in 2011.

Red Lot opens

Also on Monday, the new 219-space Red Lot for Puyallup Sounder riders will
open. The lot is located near the Puyallup Fair and Events Center. Pierce
Transit Route 495 will be timed to connect commuters to and from the train.

The environmental aspect of the Red Lot is an interesting story.

The two rain gardens capture the parking lot's stormwater runoff, allowing
it to infiltrate into the soils. Water that is unable to penetrate into the
soils will be stored in a large stormwater detention system located under
the parking lot. Also, a specific soil mixture was imported for the rain
garden, which will include several types of plants native to the Pacific
Northwest.

Budget Workshop

The Sound Transit Board on Thursday began digging into the proposed 2011
budget and program realignment during a special workshop here at Union
Station.

As we reported last week, the draft budget shows us moving ahead with
planning, building and operating the regional transit system approved by
voters. However, the prolonged economic recession is presenting significant
challenges. As a result, it is no longer possible to complete the entire ST2
program of projects within the original 15-year time frame.

At the workshop Thursday, the Board split into breakout sessions to begin
tackling ideas for potential delays in projects and cuts in service. As you
know, the agency's updated revenue forecast predicts a decline in tax
revenues of $3.9 billion through 2023, which is 25 percent lower than what
had been forecast when the ST2 plan was approved in 2008.

Five open houses and a public hearing are scheduled throughout the region
for you to comment on the service and overall program proposals.
