Subject: [List] Teaching Others How to Treat Us
Hello List
I won't go into details here, but yesterday, I truly learned about what
happens when we take on the Federation philosophy. I was talking to my
doctor when he suddenly started talking about blindness. It came out that he
really didn't view my blindness as a disability at all. He talked about it
as a challenge and that's about it. It was so interesting to me because in
the context of what we were talking about, he could have seen blindess as a
big reason not to move forward. He could have put a complete stop to
everything. It was the most amazing experience!
I truly believe that the reason he has come to this place is because I've
taught him how to treat me. As I've been exposed to Federationism, I've
learned new skills and new attitudes. I've always gone to his office
independently, I've brailled out instructions for medications or whatever,
I've requested Braille on elivators and probably many other things I can't
even think of now. He sees me getting on with it. I had absolutely no idea
he had such an inlightened view.
So, go out there and live it! For all of you at the PTC, keep going! It's
hard but trust me, it's so worth it in the end! Keep listening to speeches
and reading articles. I truly believe that we are on the right track even if
it is slow going.
Michelle
