VOLUNTEER LEGAL SERVICES COORDINATOR
King County Bar Association
Employment Opportunity

General Duties: Work as a member of the Pro Bono Services team at the King County Bar Association, and manage the VLS program including program development, daily operations, and community outreach. This position is responsible for placing cases for ongoing representation with volunteer attorneys in priority legal subject areas, overseeing public education programs (currently Make Change!), and supporting the Bailey Boushay Wills Clinic.

Reports to: Community Services Manager

Primary Duties:

Program Maintenance and Development

 *   Work with team to set goals annually for the program; monitor and revise as needed
 *   Provide CS Senior Manager with updated program information for inclusion in KCBA and legal resource websites
 *   Assess the needs of various low income populations to ensure the programs are responsive to those varied needs
 *   Complete program reports

Outreach to the Community

 *   Create and maintain relationships with social service agencies whose clients are in need of legal services
 *   Coordinate the maintenance and development of the Bailey Boushay Wills Clinic
 *   Coordinate the maintenance and development of the Make Change! Debt Education Workshop
 *   Form and maintain new community partnerships to make the best use of resources
 *   Complete the development of the student loan discharge program

Volunteers

 *   Work individually and collaboratively to recognize volunteers
 *   Create a variety of ways for attorneys to volunteer
 *   Support volunteers in finding resources, training, and mentors
 *   Assess the need for volunteers to enhance program/service delivery
 *   Provide guidance, support, resources and tools to staff who supervise volunteers
 *   Re-engage previous volunteers who are no longer volunteering
 *   Work with PBS Volunteer Coordinator to create an advisory panel of volunteers to review/assess cases
 *   Work with PBS Volunteer Coordinator to recruit volunteers
 *   Investigate complaints

Client Services

 *   Maintain a relationship with 211 and work toward receiving high quality referrals
 *   Work with NLC to increase the quality of referrals for ongoing representation
 *   Conduct intakes and referrals for ongoing representation cases
 *   Review client intakes to ensure program eligibility
 *   Review cases with PBS Director, staff attorneys, or volunteer attorneys to determine merit as needed
 *   Distribute referrals for ongoing representation from outside agencies and other KCBA programs to volunteers
 *   Identify barriers for clients and work towards reducing those barriers
 *   Maintain complete and accurate records

Qualifications:

 *   Committed to the Pro Bono Services mission of promoting access to justice
 *   Ability to make decisions on own and function independently in close cooperation with others
 *   Experience working and supervising volunteers
 *   At least two years' experience working with low income and/or diverse communities
 *   Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
 *   Excellent communication skills including the ability to respond to clients with patience, objectivity, and a nonjudgmental attitude
 *   Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, aptitude for learning new computer applications
 *   Experience and ability to work with clients in crisis
 *   Experience in public speaking or training other professionals highly desirable
 *   Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with diverse groups of people with varying perspectives, experience and expertise
 *   Initiative, creativity and problem solving abilities
 *   Demonstrated ability to coordinate a number of tasks and projects simultaneously, and to follow up on details and implementation
 *   Physical demands required include the ability to walk at least half a mile and carry up to 15 pounds

Salary:   $34,000 - 36,000 annually
Monday - Fridays 35 hours/week
