[Nfbwv-talk] MORE REPORTING ON WVSDB

I know . . . WV Public Radio crapped out in the middle of "Inside
Appalachia" yesterday evening, so if any of you tried to hear the story, you
still missed part of it.

Given the estimated costs for relocating the schools which have recently
been bandied about, I doubt that the State Board of Education will give
serious consideration to such a plan. Furthermore, the creation and location
of the schools is written into State Code, so I assume that any proposal to
relocate would need approval by the legislature. Thus, I can only imagine
the outcry from lawmakers in this end of the state--not necessarily because
of any consideration for the needs of deaf kids and blind kids, but because
of the economic impact which such a move would have on the
region--especially Hampshire County.

The Legislature will go into session next week, and the 60-day session will
conclude in April. It is apparent that education reform will be on the
agenda, but it is difficult to know whether any of that will have any impact
on the Schools for the Deaf and Blind. I am sure we will be paying close
attention and will be heard if the need arises.

Ed

Ed:

Thanks for bird dogging this for us all. Do you have a feel for what the
decision makers may be intending to do? Additionally, who do we know
inside the system to Gage perceptions and attitudes, if anyone? Finally,
when does the legislative session end?

Best,

Brad
