For the News Tribune

CHARLESTON - Long-time Mineral County historian Ed McDonald will be honored as a West Virginia History Hero during History Day at the Legislature Feb. 21 in Charleston.

McDonald, a resident of Keyser, has been an active member of the Mineral County Historical Society for 25 years.

He has served as society president and currently serves as its vice president.

An experienced broadcaster, McDonald is the founder of Mountain Streams Radio, a broadcast service sponsored by the Historical Society which seeks to celebrate the musical traditions of West Virginia and the Appalachian region, and also to provide community radio services to the Keyser/Mineral County area.

This past year, McDonald gave a society presentation on the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, which he attended.

In 2009, in recognition of his significant contributions to the society, the Mineral County Historical Society elected him as a member of its Order of Crozet.

West Virginia History Heroes are nominated for the honor by historical, genealogical, preservation, museum, patriotic or similar organizations from across the state.

The purpose of the program is to give state-level recognition to individuals chosen for dedicated service on behalf of an organization's programs, or for their recent significant contribution to state and local history through research, interpretation, publication, or preservation.

The 2019 History Hero awards program will be held at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 21 in the Culture Center on the Capitol Complex in Charleston.

West Virginia History Day at the Legislature was begun by the West Virginia Archives and History Commission in 1997 and is officially designated by the commission as a special day to recognize the state's rich and varied history.

The annual event, now in its 23rd year, features displays by a variety of groups from around the state. This year, nearly three dozen groups have registered to set up displays in the upper rotunda of the capitol.

West Virginia History Day is sponsored by the Archives and History Commission, the Mining Your History Foundation, the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia Inc., the West Virginia Association of Museums, the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, the West Virginia Historical Society and the West Virginia Humanities Council.
