BASAL INSULIN BASICS
Even when you're not eating, your body needs insulin. That's because your liver is constantly releasing stored glucose to meet your cells' needs for energy. The small amount of insulin that you need constantly to get this glucose into your cells (and prevent high blood glucose) is called basal, or background, insulin. If your pancreas still secretes insulin, it may provide all the basal insulin you need. However, if you inject or infuse insulin, there are a number of ways to make sure you always have some basal insulin on board. To learn the basics of basal insulin, read this week's Article of the Week, "Getting Down to Basals," by certified diabetes educator and online health expert Gary Scheiner.
You'll also want to see Eric Lagergren's post, "Am I Disaster Prepared?" in which Eric explores some of his reactions to the ongoing crisis in Japan, as well as the related article "Disaster Preparedness: It's Never to Early to Plan Ahead!" which discusses matters ranging from how to purify water to what diabetes supplies should be in an emergency kit.
Lastly, be sure to check out David Spero's recent blog entry, "Where the Sugar Comes From," to learn what surprising - and surprisingly common - food David considers to be a possible culprit behind the growing Type 2 epidemic.
Best,
Diane Fennell, Web Editor
