Tracy, you shouldn't have to assign which port to use if it's being
connected to a computer running Windows 7, 8 or 10.

I have and still use a parallel printer that connects to the computer's
USB port and I didn't have to set anything except install the
appropriate driver for Windows 7.

if the manufacturer didn't update the driver for the Index for a version
of Windows beyond XP, just try connecting the embosser to the computer's
USB without installing any driver. it might just work.

if you're using the cable from Index, the cable should do the
appropriate translating to allow the embosser to work.

hope it works out.
