I did try what you suggest, but it only shows me the filename without the
extension, and, when I type .brf, it makes my filename name.brf.txt, which
doesn't help.
Google says I can use the View menu to make Win10 show me the file
extension, but I can't find it there.

when focused on the file, press f2. now you can press the end key,
remove the BRF extension using the backspace key, type TXT and press
enter. if this doesn't work, explain how you used to be able to do it
and any error messages that result from the attempt.

I want to change a file extension from .txt to .brf, and Windows won't
let me do it, although I know I've done it in the past.

How do I do this?  How do I make Windows10 show me file extensions at all?
