Thanks Tony. My husband has one also, so I'll try his, and, if it fixes my
problem, I'll get a new one. Thanks for telling me the technical name.
Wonder what I'd get, if I put "doodad" into the Amazon search.

Sounds like you need a new doodad. And just for clarity when you go shopping
for it, it's called a lightening to 3.5 mm. dongle. I would start there.

Good luck.

I have an iPhone 8, with the doodad that plugs into the charging port so I
can use an ordinary earphone with it. I've been using it for a couple
years, at least.

Lately, maybe since convention, when I used my phone a lot on Zoom,
something weird is happening.

When I plug in my earphone, the phone makes the noise it makes when Siri
starts. When I try to call Aira, it either drops the call, or the agent
can't hear me. It's fine when I call without the earphone.

I shut down my phone and restarted it, and that helped some, but it's still
acting strange.

I'm running the latest iOS.

Any ideas, or ideas of what I should google, or who I could ask?

Thanks.

Tracy
