Widgets in iOS 15:  Rita’s iDevice Advice for November 22, 2021

By enabling  widgets, you get timely information from your favorite apps at 
a glance.  you can use widgets on your Home Screen to keep your favorite 
information at your fingertips.  Or you can use widgets from Today View by 
swiping
right from the Home Screen or Lock Screen.

How to Add Widgets to Your Home Screen:
The extra widget options you can add to your Home screen. Adding these can 
range from fun, such as adding featured photos, to useful, such as having 
the weather front and center for your daily planning.
Note:  If you are using VoiceOver:  when the instructions say "Tap on an 
item", perform a one finger double tap.

1.  Unlock your iPhone if it is locked.
2.  Press your Home screen until the icons start to wiggle.
3.  Tap the Add button in the top left corner.
4.  Apple will suggest widgets. If your desired widget is there, tap it.
5.  If you don't see the widget you want to add, scroll down or use the 
search bar at the top of the feature.
6.  Tap Add Widget.
7.  Tap Done.

How To change the location of the Weather Widget:
You will need to set the location for the widget itself.  Double-tap and 
hold on the Weather widget, or alternatively, triple-tap, with one finger, 
on it, then double-tap the Edit button.  Swipe to find the location that it 
is currently focused on, and double-tap on it.  You should be able to change 
it there to your preferred city.

You can also add Widgets from the "Today View". From Today View, touch and 
hold a widget until the quick actions menu opens, then tap Edit Home Screen. 
Drag the
widget to the right edge of the screen until it appears on the Home Screen, 
then tap Done.
If you do not want to add Widgets to any of your screens of apps, you can 
Add them to the "Today" View on your iPhone:
Add widgets to Today View.
1.  Touch and hold a widget or an empty area in Today View until the apps 
jiggle.
2.  Tap the Add button

in the upper-left corner.
3.  Scroll down to select a widget, then choose from three widget sizes.
4.  Tap Add Widget, then tap Done.

You can customize your widgets. For example, you can edit the Weather widget 
to see the forecast for your current location or a different location.
1.  Touch and hold a widget to open the quick actions menu.
2.  Tap Edit Widget

3.  Make your changes, then tap outside of the widget to exit.

You can also move your widgets around to put your favorites where they are 
easier to find. Just touch and hold a widget until it jiggles, then move the 
widget
around on the screen.

Use widget stacks:
Use widget stacks to save space on your Home Screen and in Today View. You 
can use Smart Stacks or create your own widget stacks.

Edit Stack Menu:
There is an Edit Stack menu, when you stack widgets on top of each other. 
You can enable/disable Smart Rotate and turn on Widget Suggestions in the 
Widget stack menu.

Enable Widget Suggestion:
If you have multiple widgets stacked on top of each other, you will be 
presented with an offer a widget suggestion for the stack based on your 
usage and preference.
Long-press on the widget and select Edit Stack.

Create a Smart Stack:
A Smart Stack is a pre-built collection of widgets that displays the right 
widget based on factors like your location, an activity, or time. A Smart 
Stack
automatically rotates widgets to show the most relevant information 
throughout the day. Here's how to create a Smart Stack:
1.  Touch and hold an area on your Home Screen or in Today View until the 
apps jiggle.
2.  Tap the Add button

3.  Scroll down and tap Smart Stack.
4.  Tap Add Widget.

Create your own widget stacks:
1.  Touch and hold an app or empty area on the Home Screen or Today View 
until the apps jiggle.
2.  Drag a widget on top of another widget. You can stack up to 10 widgets.
3.  Tap Done.

Edit a widget stack:
1.  Touch and hold the widget stack.
2.  Tap Edit Stack. From here, you can reorder the widgets in the stack by 
dragging the grid icon

You can also turn on Smart Rotate if you want iOS to show you relevant 
widgets throughout the day. Or swipe left over a widget to delete it.
3.  Tap gray x icon for remove
when you're done.

Remove Widgets:
1.  Touch and hold the widget that you want to remove.
2.  Tap Remove Widget.
3.  Tap Remove again to confirm.

Widgets on an iPad, in iOS 15:
How to add Widgets on the iPad Home Screen in iOS 15:
Note:  When running VoiceOver, perform a one finger double tap gesture when 
the directions say to tap on an item.

Long press a blank spot on the iPad Home Screen page where you want to add a 
widget .

Tap the + icon in the upper-left corner.  VoiceOver will announce the + sign 
as “Add”.
Select the app for which you want to add a widget, such as the Calendar app 
or the Weather app.
Swipe left and right between the different sizes and types of widgets until 
you find the style you'd like to use.
Once you see the one you want, tap Add Widget.
The iPad widget will now appear on your Home Screen! Now you can rearrange 
widgets and move them between the screens.
To move a widget, long press an empty spot on your iPad Home Screen.
Tap and drag the widget to your desired spot, then release it to save its 
location.
Tap Done in the upper-right corner when you've organized your iPad Home 
Screen to your liking.

How to Add Your Favorite Contacts Widget to the Home Screen on an iPhone.
You can add one, four, or six of your favorite contacts to the Home screen 
for easy access.

When running VoiceOver, perform a one finger double tap gesture when the 
directions say to tap on an item.
Long press on the Home screen until you see the app icons begin to wiggle. 
This is a one finger double tap and hold gesture, when running VoiceOver, or 
swipe up until you hear “Edit Mode”.
Tap the + icon in the upper-left corner.  VoiceOver will say “Add Widget” 
for the + icon.
Scroll down or type "Contacts" in the search bar to find the Contacts 
widget.
Tap Contacts.
First, you'll see an option to add a single contact to your Home screen. 
Swipe to see options to add four or six contacts.
When you've decided how many of your favorite contacts you'd like to add to 
your Home screen, tap Add Widget.
Your favorite contacts (those you communicate with the most) have been added 
to your Home screen as the Contacts widget! You can long press and drag the 
widget to move it around or tap a blank space on your Home screen to exit 
Jiggle Mode. To see options to message, call, video chat, or email a 
contact, simply tap on their icon within the Contacts widget.
