Question: is the difference between a nanny and a governess that a nanny is basically a surrogate parent and a governess is a private tutor.

My mother-in-law was a nanny for children age birth through 3. She sometimes told stories that showed how she not only took care of the children but also helped the parents bond and learn to care for their own children.

My cousin was a nanny for a well-to-do family with three children. She had to have a chauffeurs license and be able to drive the family car as they did not want their children in her car LOL. It was like working for royalty. In addition to the usual many responsibilities, she had to monitor the children's behavior at family social events and be prepared to escort them off the scene. She scheduled their private lessons such as dance and music and was responsible for not only taking them to these events but monitoring their progress as well.
