If you don't want to purchase either of those, you could also try
using one of the free file conversion websites out there.
www.robobraille.org is one of the best though it is annoying for
academic purposes because it strips out page numbers.

Kathy,

Two options are available. Neither will convert handwriting, and
both will ignore pictures, of course.

First, you can open the PDF file in Kurzweil 1000 and the program
will run ocr and convert the text. You can then read it within
the program, or export it to a number of formats including word
and brf.

The second is the KNFB Reader app. It works the same way as
K1000, but on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. You just open the file
in which ever app you have it, say Dropbox, for instance. Then
you choose open in and KNFB reader.

Hope this helps.

As Indiana Teacher of the Year, I'll be the first reader and
judge of the
next applications for the 2016 INTOY. These are 21-page
portfolios that are
scanned PDFs. I am wondering what the best way is to access info
in a
scanned PDF. My experience with PDFs is not very positive, but I
assume
there is a way to get around the graphic nature of a scanned PDF
so that the
screen reader does not just announce graphics or empty document.
I'll have
80 or more of these documents to read, so I welcome your help.
Thanks.
