Hi there,
I graduated from Cornell University with an undergraduate degree in linguistics about 10 years ago.

When I did my syntactic trees, I just made them in Microsoft Word, using parentheses, brackets and the tab key to show different layers. It didn't look the same as the tree diagram is produced by cited students but it conveyed the same information. I didn't think to use Excel, which wasn't terribly accessible back then, but you might be able to make that work.

I know exactly what drawing kit you're talking about, unfortunately I can't think of the name of it. I'm sure someone else on here will know. I didn't have access to any of the diagrams when I completed the course work… I just had a reader describe them to me and I just sort of made the pictures in my brain. This was honestly effective enough for most things I had to do, but it depends on what the requirements of your coursework are. If you have to create or describe images, then you'll need to have some sort of tactual access and the kit you're looking into should do the job.

Good luck,
Cayte
